First thing i would do when you notice it running hot, lift the engine cover and place your hand on the bend of the exhaust manifold right where the exhaust hoses are clamped on. u should be able to keep your hand on the manifold. should be warm but not burn you. If its hot you truly have an overheating problem.

Most likely you have the same problem we have all experienced. Electrical issues causing the gauges to read incorrectly. first have your battery tested make sure it is good and not even borderline. Next look in the maintenance section about running 8 to 10 gauge wires from the battery directly to the DECC posts. Fuse the positive side near the battery.

Even with the upgrade sometimes when i am idling running tons of electrical accessories the gauge will say its running hot. if i have the stereo on, the heater on and  filling ballast (up to five aerator pumps running). it will start to "overheat" i just reach over and shut off the heater or ballast and it almost instantly returns to normal. if not that's when i get concerned.

I have had the same problem the last three times out.  I boiled the thermostat and nothing happened.  If it was working correctly, what should I notice?  I read about the spring, but what should it do?

I am having the exact same problem.  After reading the thread provided by Les I think it's electrical. The problem is coincident with my perfect pass install.  I'm not positive so I want to check every possibility including the thermostat.

Shawn, the thermostat should spring open at about 160F.

While I was checking for leaks around the water pump I noticed water coming in from the exaust line. A steady stream of water comes in from under the right side motor mount. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix the leak. Could the leak contribute to my temp issues? Why is the sky blue?

Do you have a V drive or direct drive?

Maybe take a pic if you can. Can you see exactly where it comes in? Check to make sure the block plugs are there and tight. If water is coming out those(one on each side) it may seem like it's coming in elsewhere since they are way up under there. also check the exhaust drain plugs plugs just under the bend in the exhaust manifold. Those have a tendency to rust out. Check the ddrive winterization doc to see where all the drain plugs are( 2 block and 2 manifold).

Thanks Les.  I will check all that and try to take a pic when I get back in town on Friday.  I plan on running the ground wire this weekend as well.  I am off every Friday for the summer if you ever want to come up for some wakeboarding

It is a straight drive
I don't totally understand the electrical side of this but the oil pressure drops when i come off of it as well, but that has been going on forever

I put in a new battery in last year and installed a new stereo head about the same time all this started. Any connection there?
Thanks for all the help Bart

Bart, If you feel the exhaust manifold as wake suggested and it is indeed running hot, don;t read the rest...

If it is not too hot to touch, then it is electrical. I had the same exact symptoms a few seasons ago, felt the manifold and could touch it. It's still hot, btw, just not too hot to touch for a few seconds. There's probably a way better technical explanation, but it amounts to not enough juice to the dash. My first step was to simply run a dedicated ground wire from the battery terminal to the neg post under the dash, as suggested on this board. THat made a huge difference in temp reading and I have not gotten over 180 since. oil pressure and voltage alarms still go off, but feel If I could ever getting around to running a POWER wire direct it would fix that as well. I think you have to insert a fuse if you run power.

The manifold is hot but if felt about the same as when the temp gage read 170. I cant leave my hand on it its to hot but not hot enough to burn you over a couple of seconds. The rubber houses off the thermostat housing are warm to the touch, I could hold on to thouse. I will run the wire, do I run it to the gage itself?

Also a new development the depth finder is going crazy how do I stop it. I dont need it. also the battery was completely dead today but it held a charge all winter, any ideas.
Thanks for all your help Bart
