Now we are ready to remove and replace the 2 idler pulleys. Its pretty straight forward. The left one ( as viewed from the front) has a brass washer behind it. Don't loose it or forget to put it back! The left one takes an allen socket to remove.

Now we are ready to deal with the timing belt. If you look at the left (as viewed from the front) cam sprocket you will notice that the timing marks don't line up any more. This is because when the tensioner was removed it allowed the cam sprocket to rotate a bit. We will deal with this later. The other cam sprocket and crank marks should be checked to confirm their positions.

The Toyota timing belt is clearly marked with R Cam, L Cam, and Crank. These marks confirm correct positioning of the belt.

Start with the Left cam ( on your right!) and line up the marks. Then route the belt down to the crank. The crank marks are on the bottom of the gear and hard to see. I took the picture from under looking up. The CR mark lines up with a dimple on the crank gear.

Continue routing the belt up to the Right cam gear ( on your left) I used an Oil filter wrench to rotate the gear slightly counterclockwise to realign the marks...then I slipped the belt on.

Notice how the belt lines up with the mark on the gear, but not with the mark on the housing behind it. This is normal and when the new tensioner is installed it will line up again.

My new tensioner was slightly shorter than the old one. Don't worry, it will work fine.

Install the new tensioner and after it's bolted in pull the pin to release the tension.

Notice how the right cam gear ( on your left) marks now line up.

Now it's just a matter of reversing the removal sequence and reinstalling parts. The thermostat housing needs to be cleaned up.

Apply RTV to the flat surface and the new O-ring on the tube. Apply a little grease to the O-ring.

Make sure your new thermostat is 160 degree ( 71 degree C) and install with a little grease.

In case you forgot the routing of the serpentine belt ( I did!) here's a picture.

I hope this motivates those who have been thinking about doing this to go for it. I have learned sooo much on different forums and feel it is important to give back. I hope you found this helpful. Good Luck!
