Leaking ballast tank
« on: March 02, 2011, 19:02:28 pm »
Do you ever fix a problem only to discover another one?  Last year I upgraded my ballast manifold in my SX and discovered that both of ballast tanks were leaking.  Unfortunately the leaks were created by the previous owner of the boat.  He added a second battery in the storage locker just behind the stock battery location and thought it would be a good idea to screw it down to the floor.

Then he upgraded the stereo with several amps and lots of wiring which required him to remove the floor panels near the gas tank including the triangular shaped panel near the ballast manifold.  Unfortunately, when he reinstalled the triangular shaped floor panel he put a screw through the aft corner into the port side ballast tank to hold it in place.  I guess it is good that I know where the water is coming from but I don't know how to fix them.

Anyone have any ideas how to fix the holes permanently?

easy fix would be a little bit of silicone, or you could do an epoxy patch.

Easy fix, sheet metal screw of appropriate size and a blob of 5200 silicone sealant:)

Great idea.  Does anyone happen to know if the floor in the storage compartment is also the wall of the ballast tank?  If they are separate then the silicone might not make it down to the ballast tank.

yes the floor is the top of the tank. you can remove the level sensor just forward of the back seat cushions to check it out

If you do a search on ballast tanks you'll find tons of info, pics inside, everything.
