TPMS and Wheel Balancers
« on: March 09, 2017, 14:33:39 pm »
After two blowouts and a flat tire on the same trip the summer of 2015, I'm looking at upgrading my trailer tire system.  I typically make sure the tire pressure is 50 lbs but didn't expect my 5 year old tires with plenty of tread to delaminate.  One blowout caused some damage to the trailer fender, so I'm looking for a solution to minimize that risk going forward.

When I replaced all 5 tires, the tire shops indicated that most trailer tires are "crap" and made in China.  Goodyear recently announced the ST Endurance, made in USA and redesigned to address the issues where their Marathons failed.

Here are the upgrades I'm considering:

 - Centramatic wheel balancers on my trailer.  I called them and they indicated that they would work fine on boat trailers and not be impacted by water. http://www.centramatic.com/wheel-balance.rhtml?type=Light-Duty

 - ProPressure TPMS Pulse system to monitor pressure and temperature. http://www.pressurepro.us/index.asp?PageTypeId=3&ProductTypeId=1

 - Purchase Goodyear Endurance tires.  https://corporate.goodyear.com/en-US/media/news/goodyear_launches_american_manufactured_trailer_tire.html - Has anyone changed from 14" to 15" wheels?  Is so, what size works on your tandem trailer?

Anyone had experience with these?

Brad,
Just a note, I requested balancing of my trailer tires. The tech placed them on the inside rim.
I was wondering as I drove off there was the clicking noise. Of course the weights were scraping in the disc brake
calipers as they rotated down the street. I had them quickly removed.

Thought id chime in, been through this multiple times.

Monitors will only monitor the blow out. I check my tire pressure weekly or before any big trip.

lots of things are made in china and there not all junk (iphone)

Tires in general start to wear the minute their made. rubber deteriorates faster than you might expect. Rule of thumb with automotive tires is now matter what tread wear you have replace at 6 years. Installed custom wheels and tires on my f250. when they wore out i put the original tires and wheels back on for what i thought would be a month. 22 miles later i blew a tire and it caused $2600 damage to the truck. The other side was delaminating and had a large bubble in it.

trailer tires are probably half that. Many boat or trailer manufacturers have moved over to automotive tires. My axis has 18" wheels with "auto" tires from the factory.

You can buy auto tires just make sure the load rating will equal trailer and boat combined weight.

What ever you buy check the DOT #. The last four digits are the month and year the tire was made. Ex. "2216" 22nd week, year 2016. we had to throw brand new tires away at the dealership years ago because they were old stock, slow moving tires......
