S 22 no elec. power at all???
« on: May 04, 2005, 13:33:57 pm »
Hello,

I charged the battery on the boat we are looking to buy.
With a full charge there is no power to the gauges/starter or swithches on the dash with the key on. Is there a disconnect junction that I am not seeing? The battery is connected and so are the pos. wires to the red lug connector next to the battery.

I am going to guess the engine hatch is powered? Cant get the hatch open while pulling on the strap.

Also, why wont the floor compartments open? There are chrome pull up handles but the hatches wont open. Previous owner said they are not supposed to open, thats weird?

Thanks, Jim&Jul

there is a battery on./off switch in the v-drive compartment under the middle rear seat.  It is usually off to prevent unwanted battery drain, so even if the battery is fully charged, it won't put any poewr to the guages unless the switch is on.
To open the engine compartment/transom, you have to pull the plastic handle in the storage area by the inside step (it is behind the captains seat) at the same time as pulling the strap on the outside.  It is set up that way so that you can lock the storage compartment and prevent anyone access to the transom.
Hope that helps.

The floor compartments do open, just may be wedged in tight.

Try a flat screwdriver to pry the edge up on the panel with the chrome pull up.  The other panels can then be removed.

Good luck.

Yes, the vdrive has a green key that fits in a slot under the rear seat on the left side wall. same side as the battery. Take the middle seat out, then the white cover. If you're not getting power, make sure:

1. the key is there
2. the key is turned right to engage

you have to almost stick your head in there to see where the key goes. It's kinda hidden.

I take mine out after every trip. less drain on the bettery since there is power running to ithe dash with it in. Also a good security feature as without this key nothing can happen.

yes, I had a hard time getting the floor compartments up the first time. They do come up, so don;t worry about breaking anything, just pull the chrome handle, wiggle side to side a bit...It'll come....

The previous owner said the floor hatches are not supposed to open??  That is odd!  They fit real tight, and I suppose if they never were opened before they would be REALLY tight!  Hopefully it is the switch for the battery that is causing no electric power.  Are you sure the people are the real owners??  They don't seem to know much about the boat....and it is a real real good (see low) price..........

I would make sure I see the title before I handed over the cash!  Good luck!  You will love the boat if it all works out!

WELCOME TO BOAT OWNERSHIP!!! I'm pretty sure the problem is that the BOAT knows it's worth more then what you are paying for it. So I bet it is looking for more attention (MONEY). Try tearing up a few green backs into very fine pieces and sprinkle it all around the interior  (especialy the areas of specific problems). I'd start with a few bills and if that does not  work add to that in hundred dollar increments.
Before you know it she'll be purring like puddy tat ;D ;D.
Welcome aboard and good luck

I bet they screwed up the motor somehow, that is the only way they could be selling it for that cheap!! Do not buy it with out testing it on the water.

I just feel real bad for ya;) I'll prolly just put it out back under a tree or make a planter out of it.

NAHH just kidding:)

It is something very simple. Find the aforementioned battery switch and follow the 10 ga red and black wire for a foot or so, there should be an inline fuse holder with a 20 amp glass fuse and a spare. Check it to make sure it is not popped or corroded. I don't have a vdrive so I'm not sure if the fuse is the same type or in the same location, guys??

It's either the battery switch or that fuse. That's where the power to the dash comes from.

Thanks everyone for the help.

I found the battery switch. Figured there must be one just didnt know where.

I did not yet try to get the floor compartments open. The prev. owner said the gas tank is in there? Is that correct or is there more storage?

We put the boat into Canandaigua Lake. Started right up. After about 15-20 minutes I handed the boat off to Juli. When we switched again I noticed all the gauges were dead (what I really saw was --O-- oil press.). I shut the boat down right away to check a few things out. Restarted the boat and after about 20 sec. the gauges flipped on.

Also the trans. temp. dash light comes on and off. Sometimes the check eng. light will also. The eng and trans are not overheating. Elec problem somewhere. Anyone have these symptoms before?
I had a Supra Comp TS6M before and this boat is soooooo much smoother when running. Ride is much nicer   but then   going from a 19' to a 22'.

We have not paid for the boat yet and want to get the elec. problem sorted out first but so far very impressed.

Why did Toyota quit making the boats?? Anyone ever get the real answer????

Be good Jim&Juli

Don't worry about the gauge problems, they are common with all boats using Keyser Medallion (borg warner) gauges. Malibu, MC, Supra use or have used KM gauges. Tell your dealer to clean the connectors on the MMDC gauge computer box. That will probably get rid of the gauge readings dropping out entirely, but an occasional flakey gauge is just normal with this instrumentation package. Nothing to worry about. The engine has it's own computer, no problems there.

Toyota quit making boats because they were very expensive to build (63K) and they had trouble dealing with boat dealers and alienated key dealers. The boats have their issues, like any brand, but they are minor compared with what you gain owning a Toyota.

Seriously, if you pass on this boat, let us know because someone here will probably buy it.

Yes, the gas tank is under the floor panels, so there's no storage. under the first one toward the bow you'll find the bilge pump and the depth finder mounted into the hull. (mine does not work, never has). It's good to take the last one out and check the fuel connector to make sure everything is ok about once a year. Don; t want any gas leaking in the bilge.

Hope you buy it. We'll have to hook up if you buy it when we go to lake Canandaigua this summer...around aug-sept I think.

My instruments blink on and off too. I need to check the connections since I was under there installing Perfect pass. Nothing to worry about, but most folks (wife) don;t understand that it's not really a problem. Friends say "hey, you're boat it screwed up, man" Easier to fix than to explain that it's "cheap gauges".

As for the transmission light and the engine light. I thought mine was going off alot to until I realized that if the light/sun hits it just right, it "looks" like it's illuminated. Tricked me for a while.

The transmission light will be on whenever you are in neutral. It goes off when the boat is under power. I had the same problem with the sun glining off the engine light and thinking it was on. It wasn't.

Went out again today. I found that when the gauges go out     if I hit the left side of the dash   they spring to life. I will have to get under the dash and see whats loose.

Two things I noticed is that the depth gauge reads about 1/2 of what the actual depth is and when checking air temp and water temp    the digital reading goes from -99 to 250 F Hmmmmm not sure what to think about that???

Love the boat and will buy it but these elec. problems are B/S

Be good, Jim&Juli
