Potential Epic Buyer w/ questions..
« on: April 13, 2006, 04:04:42 am »
Hey Everyone...

My name is Zack.  I am new to the board. I am very close to buying a 2000 Epic 22 with 320 hours for $21,000 It needs some cosmetic work done and there is no stereo and two speakers are missing so i'll have to replace that, but other than that it seems to be a good deal.  I'm just wonderin if This is actually a good deal and also what are some things I should check out to make sure it's in good shape.  Is 320 hours a lot for a 2000?  I appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,

Zack

700 is not a lot for a 2000, the engines will do 3000 hours without issues if you change the oil every 200 hrs.

That is a screamin deal. You would want to replace the speakers anyway, they are crap. Polk Momo 6.5's drop right in and are a huge improvement. The stock kenwood head unit is junk too.

There really isn't much to go wrong with these boats, a plug change can fix most runnability problems. Parts are readily available. I guarantee it's by far the best boat you can get for 21k. Plus, it will use 61% less gas than any other boat with a V8.

As long as it appears it was maintained well I would say go for it.  The open bows are more desirable for sure and that is the only thing I occasionaly wish I had (I have an E21).  I would look over the maintenance records, check the fluids, steering, and make sure that the guages work.  Now that these things are out of warranty the electronics in the dash are probably more likely to give you little "fits" then the mechanicals.  I can't imagine you would find a better open bow Malibu/Mastercraft etc in that price range.  At $3 a gallon the boat practically pays you to run it compared to a GM small block, plus you can hear your skier/wakeboarder at idle without saying "huh" and it still sounds mean when you take off.

Thanks A ton!  If anyone else has anything to add I would love to hear it.  Originally did the Epic 22 not come stock with a tower?  This one has a tower but it doesn't look like some of the towers I've seen on other epics.  How is the wake on this boat?  I am mainly buying it to wakeboard on will it be good? Thanks again!

The boat has a massive trunk Put a big sack in there, that's what the factory did. Then, put a sack in the walk through. Good 2 go. Big ass wake. It is rampy with a nice long transition and a nice peak. I like it as much as any boat I've ridden behind. More than the Nautiques, I like the longer transition. I don't want to go straight up. It's easier on the knees and there's less learning curve if you have a nice ramp with a kick at the top instead of a 1/4 pipe.

There's a pic of Darin Shapiro in the pix section of the site behind a red X22 (same boat as an E22) that shows the wake well. The wake is cupped, there is a definite sweet spot that is about 75 ft back. I don't pop well and have had four knee reconstructions, so I would rather land in the transition or even the flats than case the wake. I ride five feet in.

The boat can't really handle more than 2k in extra water weight, but what boat of it's size and vintage can? None with a base engine. I run about 1500 to 1800, depending on how big I stretch the Skylon locker sack in the trunk. I've had it pushing against the lid:) It has more balls than my pals 89 Nautique 2001 with the same weight in it.

As for electronics, these boats use exactly the same electronics as Malibu and MC did in those years. Their MMDC (gauge computer) would probably work just as well, with the exception of the tach signal, which would read 1/2 actual. Toyota uses 2 pulses per revolution, the rest of the world uses 4.

If you search, you'll find some simple, chronic, gauge related issues. If you search the Malibu site, you will find THE SAME ISSUES:)

The other thing is plugs. Replace them every 400 hrs with Densos, good to go. I buy mine at the Toyota dealer, you oughta see the looks on their faces when I tell them it's for a Toyota BOAT. I'm gonna tow it up there next time.....

Hi Zack. I bought a 1999 E22 last weekend with 73 hours for 19K. Thought I paid too much (I was looking for a V-drive), but it's starting to look like a pretty good deal. One thing I can say as  Newbie is that everyone on this board is great...you will never lack for support or advice. Good luck!
