toyota epic #%$@%^$#@!
« on: July 06, 2006, 04:03:56 am »
Here's my story:
Short version:
Last labor day (lake Powell) a large rock bent the prop shaft, flattened the prop and bent the rudder.  Replaced all.

Memorial day the boat loses all power-----the shaft bolt came off and the shaft flew backwards bending the new acme prop.  Bolted shaft back together.  Worked fine the rest of the weekend.

Took to boat shop and they re-tightened everything and aligned the engine.  They said it was badly out.  They said it was fixed and ready to go.

July 4th weekend.  weird vibrations.  loss of power.
now the coupling bolts are completely sheared off.

What the hay.

Anyone have any ideas?
Did get to ride around all weekend on Fetivus's Saweet 247.

if your shearing bolts something is way out of wack. you could go back to the boat shop with receipt in hand and a big ?  then again maybe you don't trust them. do you have any shops around you that work on high perfomance boats or limited hydros? they should know what they're doing as alignment would obviously be critical at high speeds. have them check everything from the front of the engine, through the hull, to the prop/shaft end for alignment and true.

Dealer was the original toyota dealer here in denver.
they now sell Malibu.
They claim that someone rewelded the engine mounts.
Jacked.

Oh, oh, I sense someone going over to the dark side. Perhaps my sweet baby will be the only Yota at Powell next week. Fest has become the corruptor.

Good advice from Masonlk, something's gotta be crooked. It's not Toyotas fault, just a simple mechanical issue. It should be pretty obvious when they put a dial indicator on it and rotate the shaft.

I had nothing to do with it.  I didn't shear the bolts or misalign the drive alignment actuator.  I think the Lake Powell incident was the culprit.  Although I am going with him to see my Malibu sales guy tomorow.  I'll be the little devil sitting on his shoulder yelling "it's under warranty!"
I shoulda sold him mine a few months ago, but I'm sure BS is enjoying it.

javman...sounds like the repair job after the Lake Powell incident was faulty. two choices...fix it right (with a guarantee) or buy a tank of gas for your new mb. no brainier for me, but then i'm running about 2.78 gallons per hour. besides, you run into a big old rock with one of those mb's and 3000# of ballast and you may not make it back to shore!   hey fest where'd you buy your rock damage waiver?

Luke, I mean Javman,  I am your father.  Together we can rule the lake, swamping shallow ski boats and wreaking havoc on fishermen.  It is your density.

Oh, and Mason, I have my boat insurance with American Family.  And my ballast is only around 1800#.  And in the 3 years I drove my S22, very carefully, I might add, I never got GPH anything close to 2.78.  FYI though, on our last trip I ran about 25 gallons per 5 hour day in my Malibu, some wakeboarding, some tubing, some surfing.  Ten hours on the boat meter, $150 in gas.  If you drive her like you love her, she'll return the favor. That's with the 450hp 8.1l indmar.  Just to clarify, when you say MB, you mean BU, right, not MB as in the MB ski line of boats.  It took me a few months to figure out the shorthand names on wakeworld.  I think my fav is Nauti.

Do you really want one of those Festivus like flags? I can probly get one at MP if you want one. Congrats on the new purchase. I seems like all my good friends go over to the dark side. Thats OK, Anakin turned back to the light in the end. In about 2020, you and Fest will be buying 20 year old Epics for 20k. You'll be feeling like you got  a great deal.
