help with X-22 ballast switch
« on: April 28, 2010, 06:43:32 am »
Looking to purchase a 2000 X-22 with integrated ballast in the rear trunk.  but there is only the panel switch assembly (as shown in the wiring diagrams section under maintenance) on the dash.   THERE IS NO BALLAST SWITCH, anywhere!

The owner purchased the boat from a wakeboarding camp in 2007.  He has never looked into it and never even tried to fill it.

I have searched the forum and maintenance.  According to the TMS Reference Figures -  the dash looks like the 99MY version. (so maybe it is a 1999?)   Still, any help as to where to begin?

thanks!

oh, another question - I just read this from poster Ktown back on 8/19/07 and he wrote,
" Check to ensure the boat reaches close to 6,000 RPM's.  If it doesn't pass 5,200, it may have a problem with the engine, prop set-up, etc... but needs to be remedied. "

I test drove the boat referenced above and it seemed fine in regards to power, torque, speed, etc. but at the top end the RPMs were only around 3,000.  It has a 4 blade prop.  I have read about this engine's RPMs being much higher.  Does this raise any eyebrows?

Hey man, This is a Kick ass boat for sure.  My ballast is in the back also and the switch is one of the auxillary switches.  Mine will fill, and drain.  Both are aux switches.  The rpm ? is a good one, cause they should go way higher then that.  Mine will max out at around 5800, but I don't go that fast cause it is harder on the engine (I think) and I don't need to go that fast.  Try to run the engine in nuetral (push the center button on the throttle and put it forward) and see how many rpms you can get that way.  If it reves up, it is the prop in the water.  If its not, I don't know other then gas filter or something like that.  I hope this helps a bit.

I have a 2000 X22 with the soft ballast. It uses two bottom right auxiliary switches (unlabeled) - to the left of the steering wheel. The fill and drain buttons are a bit different than later models with the hard ballast.
Go to the 'Maintenance' section, under 'Manuals' there is an 'Tower and Ballast Owner's Manual'. This should help you out. Let me know if it works.

Thanks for the tips so far.  I missed the "Tower and Ballast Owner's Manual"

But the problem is still that I didn't see any auxiliary switches.  Again, I haven't seen the HIN number but the dash looks like a 1999 although it is advertised as a 2000.  It is a soft sac in the storage area, so again another sign of an early model I would assume.

I was looking through the old classified ads at the photos and saw where an x-22 had a set of switches under the throttle on that carpeted shelf.  There is nothing there on this boat.  the only switches are the panel assembly with: blower, bilge, nav, courtesy lights, storage lights, and horn.  That's it!  Hanging down under the dash on the right side is a 12v cig. lighter outlet and a loose purple wire loosely hanging under the throttle area....has something been taken out?!!!  I am assuming so?  I am told there wasn't a paper trail from the wakeboard camp in regards to maintenance...

I will try to rev the engine in neutral if I get it back out on the water to check the max RPM's.

thanks for the help and keep any thoughts coming.

Hello all, I am the current owner of this boat.
Regarding the ballast, I have never used the ballast sack located in the storage locker. However, I am interested in finding out where the switches are located, or should be located, for the X-22. After reading this post, and looking at several pictures of used boats on this site, it looks as though the switches should be mounted to a panel located under the throttle control lever. This panel, however, doesn't exist on my boat. The upholestry on this boat was replaced in 2006 before I bought the boat, and perhaps this panel was removed at that time. The sack and the pumbling still exist, but as I stated before I have never had a use for it.
Regarding the VIN #, I do not have the VIN# on me but I bought the boat as listed (2000 x22), and the NADA does not list the X-22 under 99, only 2000 and later.
Regarding the tach reading, I believe this has to do with the PPR signal coming from the engine. I remember reading an old post: Wide Open Throttle (WOT) only hits 2750 rpm (& prop advice), where a poster indicated that the Toyota engines use a PPR signal of 2, which is typ for a 4 cylinder engine, instead of a PPR signal of 4 (typical for 8 cylinder engine). The maintenance section had a "how to" of how to correct on the digital millenium guages, but I'm not sure how to change on my guage (not digital).

The boat could quite possibly have had an MMDC replacement with one from a different manufacturers boat. You could replace it or better yet, put Perfect Pass on it, and it would have the proper firmware for the tach signal on a Toyota.

As for the ballast, pull the drivers side cupholder and feel down in there for wires. The pump for the ballast was probably a water puppy located in the bilge under the back seat. It may have been moved to the pass. side storage compartment. I have also seen dealer retrofits of a Rule 1100 aerator on an intake in front of the battery in the bilge on X22's. Look in those places for a pump, look on the underside of the boat for a thru hull too. Follow the wires. You will probably need to replace the pump anyway, if the wires and hoses are there (and possibly the flow alarm sensor) it should be pretty easy to repair.
