water dripping from block
« on: May 25, 2014, 02:53:50 am »
de winterized yesterday and noticed some water dripping from behind the alternator (between alternator mounts on the block)

i removed the alternator to get a better look and can see a white calcification streak starting at the leak and following the path of water to where it drips off. i can't rub the white mark off so it makes me think it was happening last summer.

Click to see the pictures and video.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/s3d2g5p57674qpx/AADE6F661oiBpUNvqLI2cbF2a

the video is with the alternator in and boat running so you can see the dripping and the pics are of the alternator removed for better pics

there are 2 horizontal bolts and the leak is directly between them where the 2 engine parts are bolted together. must be a hole in the gasket

i can't find the torque specs of those bolts to check them i went through the whole M1UZ manual but can't figure out what I'm looking at ?

what are my options ?

we fixed a much worse leak on my dads outboard 6 or 7 years ago with JB weld and its still holding strong

ref #9 figure #3 in engine parts manual.  Remove, make sure flat, clean and apply high temp sealant.  Don't know torque.

Remove cover on timing belt and look at water pump for excessive leaking.
Capt Rick

The ref #9 is when you don't winterize the engine it will warp the cover plate a leak water .

On the winterization to make it easier remove hoes at engine  oil cooler at base of oil filter then drain other side of block too!
There are no more drain available because they a for marine application only.

Fig 3 # 9 is: 1149250010   PLATE,WATER SEAL

you can see that plate in the first pic ,very close but the leak is coming from slightly right where the 2 engine parts are bolted together
just above what appears to be the timing belt tensioner

 ???

Going to have to go with Rick here. It could be the water pump leaking internally. You don't want to be throwing water on the timing belt. I think when you mention the belt tensioner is the serpentine belt you are looking at.

This is interesting. Keep us posted.

Going back and looking at your video again, it is the timing belt tensioner...

The bolts look like they were removed previously. Did you you replace your timing belt recently?

i bought my 2001 s22 from "toyboat" beginning of last summer and he had the timing belt done at the local sacramento toyota/lexus dealer, i think only a year or so before, I'm thinking it has possibly been dripping since then.

do i have to pull the timing belt to access the water pump ?

I'm going to have a toyota mechanic friend take a look at it and see if we can narrow it down

im guessing i can remove the timing belt covers as captain rick said and run the boat with them off to see the leak more clearly ?

original owner bought the boat new put 48 hours on it and stored it in a warehouse till 2006 when he sold it to his friend.
I bought the boat off that friend with 174 hours last year and he had the timing belt and water pump done in 2011 by the Lexus car dealership.

I ran the boat last summer only and it now has 200 hours.

From Fig #4 I removed:

http://www.epicmarine.com/figures/e_Fig_4.php

2- COVER,SUB-ASSY,TIMING BELT,NO.3 RH
9- COVER SUB-ASSY,TIMING BELT,NO.2

I re-installed the necessary parts, ran the engine and took a new video. Then I removed the serpentine tensioner assembly and the alternator and took new pics:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/63w04dpdovue315/AAByaeubtGyOiB1KAhuHGE2Ja

I can now clearly see the water leaking from around the water pump assembly, I can see it through two small oval holes in the top left and either the same water leaking down or another leak on the far left by a mounting bolt. All the parts where water has been dripping are brown.

I'm assuming my next step is to remove the timing belt and replace the water pump and gasket since the belt is only 40 hours old I'm not sure if its necessary to change again?

is the water pump in our boats the exact same as a 1999 SC400? what else will i need?

Any help or comments are greatly appreciated guys.

Do a search here. There is a lot of info on what parts to get.

Don't buy an aftermarket pump. Stay with the OEM made by Assis (sp?)

One think is for sure, you got the video thing down to a science. Excellent  :D

bought the timing belt, tensioner, pulleys, water pump Etc. all in one kit from rock auto

this video and a few others with the EM and CO sections in the manual made the whole job easy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCTGHurWA1c

took some time as i kept hitting a wall and had to run out and buy a pulley puller RTV silicone a big alan key and take the boat to work to use the mechanics air gun with a 22mm socket to get the main drive pulley off.

other then all that its not a hard job at all just take things off one at a time and either label everything or put all the bolts and nuts back where they go. i put things on a shelf as i removed them then worked in reverse order for the reassembly referencing the manual for torque. one thing i didn't do that the manual said was remove the intake manifold.

the leak was a broken o ring on a water bypass tube coming in the back of the water pump that has probably been broken since the timing belt and water pump was done in 2012 before i owned the boat. remember to put some dish soap and water in a small Tupperware to lube the o rings on install !

all new pump, belt, synthetic oil and the boat runs great, loaded her up with 2300lbs of ballast and surfed for hours tonight.
