It's held on with screws and some 5200, you could remove it yourself. I was thinking of removing mine but was told by someone that knows that the boat will porpoise with weight in the trunk without it. Make sure you can put it back on if necessary, don't glass over the holes or anything!

Pete,

Is the purpose of the wakeplate to prevent the porpoise?  My boat came without a wakeplate.  What is porpoising?  My boat has a smooth ride on smooth water right up through WOT.  If the water is rough, like it is frequently on Lake Michigan, then I've got a decent ride through about 1/2 to 2/3 throttle, any faster and the boat slams the waves pretty hard.  I think it would slam the waves the same way with or without a wake plate.

Porpoising is when the bow rythmically rises and falls when cruising at a constant speed over even smooth water. It's fixed by adding weight to the nose or by a trim tab that lifts the back of the boat (pushing the nose down a little) a.k.a. the wakeplate.

My S22 porpoises a little when empty, so I've been rolling with between a hundred and two hundred pounds of metal ballast under the bow cushion.

I wonder if the Tige of my friends, which has reportedly been a porpoise-halfbreed, just had the taps system inaccurately set?  It is nice to have the wake size so easy to control.
I just bought 150lbs of iron dumbells for my bow.  Haven't tried them yet, but I am sure it will  be good to my wake.  I rarely have porpoising problems.  My boat has been stuck on the trailer which in the shop getting a new brake actuator and bearing buddies, the waterproof kind.  Should get it back monday

Normally people will add their ballast to the rear of the boat until either the wake crumbles at too low a speed and/or too short a rope, or they have bow-rise problems that complicate getting on plane, seeing over the bow, or for us at least, make speed REALLY hard to nail. At that point you start adding some to the bow to delay wake crumbling or reduce bow-rise problems.

If you're not having the crumble problem, the bow weight won't help your wake, but it will make the boat plane quicker and have better speed stability.

I put that weight all the way up underneath the little center bow cushion. Might wrap them dumbells up with a towel or something to cushion the fiberglass.

good tip on the towel wrap.  We normally go in the early am, and it gets chilly up front, so everyone hovers in the back  and the wieght distribution isn't ideal.  So I'm thinking the weight up there will help some.  Only bad part is I really don't want any more tongue weight with the trailer.  The 2002 Sequioas don't have the ride leveling suspension, so the truck looks like it is over weighted already.  We are planning on the new body style late next year.  Anyone have any info on it?

Jeff,

I was out this weekend only to find that I didn't have the memory card in my camera.  I'll try again for a 36 mph photo next weekend.

I was on water like glass and didn't notice much porpoising at all.  Only once did it seem to kick in mildly and I probably wouldn't have noticed it if not for this thread.  The boat was empty with almost no weight in the trunk.  It's a direct drive.  Does engine placement matter?

Many thanks Lakeside!

I will take some pics and post to compare. I think it will be interesting.

The X22 is direct drive also, I think that is what you were asking. In fact I think they are probably identical except for the tower and wakeplate.

I think that most of the 22 foot d drives have the wake plate. I was thinking about removing mine, it should make the transom sink a bit better. I now have an automated ballast system for the front so I can keep it from porpoising. That is, if I ever get home to use the boat. I'm in Nanaimo, BC today. It's very cool but it's not home. I am going out on a boat today, not sure if the guy wakeboards or whatever but I'll jump in the ocean regardless.

For some reason, my computer isn't letting me attach a photo right now.  I was able to add a picture over to the left @ about 36 mph.  It's a best guess since the photo was taken before my speedometer was recalibrated.
