Spot on Fiber Glass Coating
« on: August 03, 2005, 02:57:22 am »
Attempted to search the threads but didn't find anything on scratches, gel coat damage or spots that fit my situation.  Only that these are not good and look for them before buying.

Last weekend while we were swimming my wife noticed a "metal color" spot bellow the waterline our our S22.  A wave came through... and we have not been able to see it since.  Reaching down I can feel an irregular mark... amoeba like. indented about 1/16 to 1/32" around the "amoeba" edges.  Prob 1 to 2" inches across.  On the trailer it is almost directly above the rear tire of a double axel on the starbard side and is not visible.  No other marks are found.  The boat has never been out without me on it.  I purchased it new in Dallas.  Never beached, struck or abused.  Understand that if I kept it in the water this would be a big issue, but she lives in dry storage near the lake.  Should I worry about getting this fixed?

Much appreciated!

Here's where is gett's a little interesting... I'm not a conspiracy theorist but... ever since purchasing the boat there was a white plastic strip sticking up between the trailer and boat in the exact same spot.  Sometimes those toweling off our boat would pull a piece off.  And after finding the "metalic" spot... when I was pulling up on the trailer I noticed white plastic on the top the rail next to the starboard rear wheel.  I stopped and had a buddy pull it off and it was two strands of white electrical tape.  Could this be a cover-up?

It's my first premium boat and I'm wondering if this "wear" patch could happen at trailering.  I'm usually a few degrees off center to the towards the port side on hitting the trailer.  Can't think of anything else.  Anyway... thoughts, advice, opinions welcome!

Love my boat... AND EVERY DAMN ONE OF YOU!!! MAN

A picture or two might help ;-)

Big thing is that you just need to pay attention to how it sits on the trailer and whether it looks like you could get gelcoat-to-trailer frame contact at any time.

A litle tape to protect things ain't a big deal. Our S22 came from the same dealer, and there were a few screwy things: 1) the prior owners left a piece of scrap carpet between the keel and the spare tire (under-trailer mount) to keep the keel from discoloring while it rested on the spare (!!!!), 2) the tower was mounted there and I ended up remounting it cuz it was done so horribly, and 3) there are little overspary spots on the port cushions near where it looks like they screwed up some gelcoat (maybe while installing the tower) and then left even the removable cushions adjacent to the repair in place while they sprayed. The prior owner wisely just got to the point where he stopped letting the dealer touch the boat - they were doing more harm than good.

Its probably just the spot where that spastic little dog of yours was taking a leak every morning.

Yes Phil Dill SMS :) and no on the dog.... surfer table.  What is that by the way?  Some Redmond (sp?) WA tribute to the instruments of early boarding?  Outboard on a table... Gilligan?  WTF?  By the way, my dog can get more air than you.  Don't have any pic's leaping off level ground at the moment

Thanks for the reply TF!  On the pics it's well bellow the water line and buried on the trailer against a padded rail.  It's Vertical on the hull.  Would have to put it in a sling to photo.  Let's just say that is deep enough to be through the GC (Assuming).  Immediate repairs needed?

As always Thanks!  Some of the replies are curious to me....  And I'm new to this.  But I still love every damn one of you!!!!

Sorry man, I am just the derailer of threads on this website. You will find that I am useless for repairs and any technical info. I just love my Toyota and all things having to do with the water. All I'm good for is sarcasm and a joke or two that I think are funny. I'm sure not everyone thinks they are. I was just wondering if the spot on your boat matches the spot on my living room carpet where my spastic dog takes a leak every morning. I think Festivus has the same spot at his house.

my dog is no more.  I'm proud to say I've been 8 months dog-free.  It's not that you don't like the fuzzy guy, it's just better without him around.  (insert skull and crossbones)

I experienced some gelcoat damage when the screw holding down the fender bunk came loose.  Now I periodically check them after each launch.

Thanks Brad!

I think that is what happend to mine.  My buddy from yesterday said there was something funny going on with a screw holding the padding to the fender well.

Is it critical to get the hull repaired?  I.E. lead to more gelcoat or hull damage?

Thanks again dude!

Had the same thing happen with the bolt comming loose on the fender padding and wearing a spot in the gelcoat.  Used some marine epoxy to fill it in and buffed it.
