Help!
« on: June 23, 2016, 15:39:24 pm »
Went to take an afternoon cruise in my 99 X22 that has ran perfect all season.  Dropped the lift started right up as soon as I got to the lake.  I started airing up a tube with a small pump that plugs into a cigarette lighter port and began to smell smoke I shut the boat off and opened up the cover and smoke was coming from the drivers side of the motor.  I looked all over the place thinking I would see some burnt wire or oil leaking and couldn't find anything at all that was out of the ordinary.  The motor wasn't even very hot so I let the smoke clear up and looked again.  After about 15 minutes I tried to crank it over and it would crank but didn't have enough juice to turn it over very hard.  I have two batteries and when I was starting the boat I had it switched to all so both batteries were cranking.  After it seemed like I didn't have any power to turn the motor over I hooked the battery charger up to both batteries and couldn't get a charge to register on either (which was off because the boat turned over on the first turn like always just a half hour earlier.  Has anyone ever had/heard of anything similar to this happening?  I would have to think it's somewhere in the starter, alternator, or burnt up pump.  I have looked all over an haven't found anything that really matches up to the problems I'm encountering so figured I'd ask around the forum to see if anyone has an experience like mine.  The boat has only 350 hours and I've owned it for 7 years with no issues and serviced/winterized yearly.

There is a fuse within 6 inches of the battery so much I would check that fuse I would turn the key on see if the ignition system turns on in the – turns on  I would also check the oil check the transmission

Seems to be related to the starter.  I've tested both batteries and they are good and getting power to the starter.  It will crank over, but very weak and eventually it will start and runs fine.  Going to tryt o pull the starter and check the contacts on it.

Buckeye, before you do that, try hooking the + battery cable and the main engine harness on the same post of the Perko. I was having starting trouble, and Capt Rick suggested to do that. It's quick, and will save you a lot of heart ache. That fixed my starting issue after 2 days of fumbling around with a multimeter chasing voltage. I had just pulled off the throttle body with every intention of removing the starter when he said to try that.

Well, I had another mechanic take a look at it and they believe the starter is good and that the alternator is seized up and the belt was burning up on the back side.  That makes more sense as to why the batteries had no charge since I was running everything straight off the batteries.

You said you had the batteries tested and were good? That makes a big troubleshooting difference if they're dead.

Read it again I stated the batteries were dead right after the problem occur ed when I hooked the charger to it.  The next day after having the charger on both batteries the mechanic checked them and said they were good.  It is definitely the alternator I pulled it and it will barely spin and the back side is charred up.  Thanks for the feedback though glad the first mechanic was booked up and didn't get me for all that labor to tear it down and pull/replace the starter.

Do the Capt Rick certified marine one. I had one seize up, break the belt, overheat real bad like, caused heartbreak and depression. It was overloaded from the ridiculous stereo and charging two batts.

The aftermarket one worked for a couple of months then corroded and fell apart. I went with the factory Marine replacement. High cost, I'll get this one rebuilt next time and have it done by a shop that does marine alternators. But for NOW, buy the Toyota Marine part. My .02, been there. There's pics on here of my completely rotten 6 month old alternator
