I bought a low hour X22, what should I do?
« on: May 23, 2022, 14:05:58 pm »
I just bought a 2000 Epic X22 with 60 hours, what are some things I should look out for?   Any advice to a new boat owner?

I'm not super mechanically inclined, was it a bad idea buying a 22 year old boat?

I appreciate for any advice!

My biggest problem right now is, its super hard getting this trailer out of my driveway because the prop is so low.

The only mechanical problem I know about the boat is the blower is not working, possibly due to wiring?  Is it a bad idea to try to go without a blower for a couple weeks?

Not a big deal to run without a blower but make sure you open the clamshell and air it out first. There's a writeup on the maintenance page http://www.epicmarine.com/docs/blower.pdf  that shows how to replace it. Scroll up to the Maintenance tab and just about all of the stuff you might be working on is detailed there. THe rest can be found using the search function on the forum, there's 20 years of posts, troubleshooting, upgrades, etc in there.

Welcome to the forum and the Epic community! The boats are fantastic and reliable, there's a few chronic issues (gauges unreliable, buttons inop, seats cracked) but driveline is bulletproof.

and the trailers SUCK. I spent 10X more time working on my trailer than the boat!

On the trailer front I've been looking at the rollers they are putting on newer trailers to help. Not sure how well they work on non smooth surfaces.

One thing is the timing belt. They are rated for 10 years, if it hasn't been replaced I suggest getting it done. Otherwise these engines are darn near bullet proof

I added steel rollers to the bottom of my trailer frame that protecst the prop.  Yes, my trailer still drags, but the steel rollers at least prevent the frame from dragging and potentially damaging the part that is supposed to protect the prop.

Good luck.

I have owned my Epic 21 direct drive for 3 plus years now and love it.

I wish there was a cooler back story, and maybe its possible they aren't the real hours?  (Not sure if replacing the Tachometer would change the hours?)

I found it on Facebook Marketplace 12 hours after the guy posted it, and he didn't have the hours listed, but I saw them in one of the photos. He seemed to think they were real, and he said he only had the boat for 2.5 years and put about 8 hours a year on it.  (he said he preferred his bass boat for fishing)

I don't understand how a 22 year old boat could only have 65 hours, but the odometer appears to be working correctly.  The engine doesn't look that worn, but it does look a little old with some paint beginning to flake.  I'll post some pictures later this week.

Probably fine. Does it have the millenium dash (soft touch buttons on left) or standard dash with hard switches?

It could have had the computer replaced, this happened on every Epic that I know including both that I've owned. This would have been done early in the boats life, most likely under warrantee so boat was low hours. It might be the real hours, how do the seats look?

Do the maintenance tasks listed in the docs on the maintenance page and report back, and post pics!

X22 are cool boats and some of the upholstery panels and seats are still available via the web.
