Shaft Repacking - who has followed the easy directions?
« on: August 19, 2006, 06:05:19 am »
So instead of removing both original layers of packing it seems like this outline below from Capt Rick in an earlier post is an easier option. Anyone done it this way? This isn't the correct way as outlined in the pdf.file but anyone have any feedback on its success? I am also assuming the teflon is being cut to fit the shaft of the jam nut then stuffed back into the packing gland.

I just managed to swap out a new bilge pump (it took me slightly longer than the 20minutes it did for cyclone, but it got done) so expertise on repairs is severly lacking.

---------------------------------
This is the easy way to do it:
1. Remove cotter pin
2. Remove Jam nut and slide away from packing gland.
3. Cut teflon coated packing so it fits the shaft w/o a space. 1 will fit
4. insert on shaft and stuff it like a turkey.
5. Secure the nut hand tight , back out so it has 1/8 turn loose.
6. Install cotter pin
7. put boat in water and run it.
8 Adjust nut so just a drip drip drip.
9. inspect after running do not overtighten.
----------------------------------

Thank you for the help.

cripes..........well, tried doing this the easy way and looking for any help on what I did wrong. the packing nut was a tight as it would go by hand and still leaking at idle, so i stuffed in another layer of packing as the 'easy' instructions say and tightened the nut down on it, hand tight, then loosened 1/8 turn. it was tought to get the packing pushed down enough to get the jam nut on, but once it started threading it went fine.

went to the lake and tested it. took it out for a good run and no dripping at idle but with the prop spinning in gear still no dripping. from what i have read it seems like it should be dripping slightly while the shaft is turning

- so what did i do wrong or didn't do right or what are my options?

thanks for the help.

I think no dripping is good, yes?

I thought I read that no dripping, when at idle, with the prop not turning is good. But, that it should be dripping slightly when the prop is turning in gear and moving. That the slight dripping when in gear is the visual that the prop shaft is getting enough lubrication or cooling or something. Anyway, any clarification would be appreciated and possible suggestions if I didn't do it right. Thanks.
