wake pics and weighting down SX
« on: August 21, 2006, 15:58:10 pm »
Since us Paddies are new to this game i was wondering if any of you SX owner have pics of the wake behind your boats. If so can you post them and let me now what set up you have for the ballast and if you are using additional ballast. Also wondering what speed you find the best wake for boarding at and Length of rope.

Cheers Robbie

Mine's the S22, so we share a hull and engine, but yours adds internal ballast. If you're lucky and have the wet floor, you'll have a nice 800 pounds or so of well-balanced weight on top of what I'll show you...

I use the sacks below just because they're big and were really cheap - you could get fancier and get some custom sacks made for cheap that'll fill your spaces better. Anyhoo, I don't use the sac covers and fill them about as much as they'll take. One goes sideways in the trunk, and one goes all the way forward in the walkway. Together you're talking 1400-1500 pounds. It really makes a big difference behind the boat, but while speed control is a little tougher, the boat still planes and handles very well. A wet floor ballast would add nicely to this! Also, I always carry between 100 and 200 pounds all the way forward in the bow just for trim.

If you're more willing to lose your v-drive locker storage for the day than the trunk, you could get a pair of custom bags made for there. I may end up doing this someday because you can get 1300 pounds balanced back there under the engine hatch and it's a little farther forward than the trunk (and I do use the trunk for board storage). I would probably make a bulkhead for the port side so that the space matches the size of the starboard side - right now, the port side extends all the way forward under the seats.

The Bump leaves a bit of room in the trunk on each end and in height too, so if the 700 back there isn't enough for you, you could have a custom sack made for it too. If you went longer only, you could probably get up to 800 or so, while a rectangular sack of greater height could really get you well over 1000. If you were to do that, you might need to look at the strength of the removeable bulkheads there - don't want to push the bulkhead into the engine's drivebelt, etc. You could reinforce it or replace it with a stiffer material than the composite board used. If you really filled the trunk, you'd have to add a lot of weight to the bow (maybe lead under the seats in addition to a walkway sac). Ideally, I'd recommend equal weight between trunk and bow, whereas the v-drive lockers you could maybe go 60% in back, 40% up front.

For the most part, the wake is fun empty but with a few adults. I've been enjoying it with just a single Bump in the center of the cockpit (the aft end up against the tranny cover), so that would be pretty comparable to you running with just the wet floor ballast.

Another option for the front if you want to hide the sac up front is
http://www.wakeside.com/page/w/PROD/fly_high_brand/fly_high_integrated_bow_sac_w711
This one fits well and you can almost fill it all the way up.

This Fly High integrated bow sack has 800 lb capacity.  I doubt you can get that much weight in the bow area under our seat cushions.  Probably need to order a custom sized bow sack if you want to pursue this option.

I have the fly high bow sac in the front of my S-22.  If you fill it all the way up you won't be able to put the seat cushions on and the cup holders pop out.  However, you can fill them up almost all the way and get a good amount of weight up front.

Good to hear on the bow sac.  It sure makes it nice to be able to conceal the ballast and not take up the walkway.

Any guess on how many lbs. your able to fill of the 800 in the spec?

Anyone know if that integrated bow sac would fit under the closed bow of the E21 (or other off shelf options)? My only concern would be the one side running into the heater, wiring, etc. under the dash. Maybe I'll have to measure it.

Epic toy, O'd love to see some pics inside the bow of that boat. Is it just a big open space under there? If so, I'm thinking you could get WAAAAY too much ballast in that boat!!! For starters how does a big trangle sack, fat seat and bump in trunk sound? Sounds pretty close to 3K to me. About 4" of freeboard. Gotta be a big thick one. Anyhoo, I'd love to see how the observer seat looks, comes up, what it looks like underneath, etc. when you get a chance.

Thanks!

I was talking to this kid that works at Ski masters who also has an E21, wakeboards every day, and has something like 2k# in it. He was telling me that his wave is like waste high and he likes it better than most of the boats he rides. And he rides all the wake boats that go through Ski Masters. He also commented on how great it was that he used like a 3rd of the gas that those wake boats use. Good stuff.

The forward space is surprisingly big. I have to fully crawl under there to get stuff out sometimes. I'll try to take some pics and get them up soon!

Funny you should mention it. I have had several people say the wake on my E21 is great and I only use human fat sacks. The closest I ever get to them is seeing them in the rear view mirror from the driver's seat! I will try to find some pics also.
Don't be so humble, you're not that great.

Last summer I decided to look at all my options for a bigger wake. I ended up with two 550 fat sac's. I put one in the walkway between the windshield and the other in the furthest aft locker. I very rarely filled them both full because the wake was TOO BIG, but perfectly rampy with just enough kick at the top to get you rollin the windows down. Cal, can attest to this. He was on the boat for the "Fill'em to the top" test run.
I think the two sac's and a 1100 gpm pump ran me about $120 on ebay. HUGE bang for the buck.
