winterizing
« on: October 29, 2006, 20:32:05 pm »
I just winterized my e21 I followed each step they had on the board. I just wondered if there was anything I had to do with the waterpump or impeller? Another thing, when I was running it in the water for the stabill to get threw the fuel sytem it started to overheat on me by the time I noticed it, it was smoking a little bit I shut it down. Then when I drained the manifolds and the thermastat there was no water in them, themanifolds or the hoses that go to the thermastat. The thremo was very crusty looking and I think its bad does any one know more about this.

I was concerned last year (my first) about the impeller/water pump area but didn't get a definitive answer. This year I noticed that I got a decent amount of water out of the hose on the engine side of the sea water strainer when I removed it. I assume this was draining water from the impeller area. If you had no water in the hose that goes to the thermostat, had you already removed and drained the sea water strainer? If not, the concern is obviously why water is not getting to it - impeller stuck or other obstruction?

I also think the area behind my thermostat looks crusty and corroded, sort of like what my cardiologist says my blood vessels look like. I pondered the issue for awhile. I felt much better after putting the thermostat back in and having a beer. If anyone knows how to clean the area without creating a blockage somewhere down the line and causing the engine to stroke out - let us know.
Don't be so humble, you're not that great.

 :)

Better play it safe and replace both the impeller and the thermostat. Having the engine overheat and no water in the risers is not good at all. You did have it on the water or some type of fake-a-lake hook up? :(

If you remove the hose at the oil cooler, the water should drain out of the pump. I also pull the thermostat to drain the little bit of water that is behind it.
