The paddies need help
« on: February 20, 2007, 14:59:15 pm »
We have finally gotten back into the garage to start work on the Epic SX again.
We have hooked everything up again and we are back to square one. The engine is starting and then cuttig itself out. There is proper oild pressure plenty of fuel etc. Can you guy give us suggestion for thing to check before we have to call in the Toyota engineer here in Ireland. We ahve checked the dead man and most other thing but we may just be missing out something so obvious. Will the boat engine start with the boat out of the water if you dont have a fake lake set up. So if any of you guy have any idea big or small we will be ready to try them as we are dying to get here up and running and post pick on the site of the pimped out Irish Epic. Thanks for your time.

Robbie,
Glad to hear from you! We were all wondering what happened! Of course, we'll help if we can.

When you say it starts do you mean that it runs, like idles, and then stops? Or, does it catch a cylinder or three but not stay running?

My suggestion is to put a bit o that good Irish ale in the gas and oil. That oughta start anything up. One more thing. If you are trying to start it in the boat with everything hooked up, I have had two epics with bad connections at the key switch. They would start, vibrate a bit and lose connection and die. Check the connections at that switch.

It starts and like you say hits one or two cylinders and then shuts down. We are in the process of trying alot of things. There is a box under the dash which has a load of white circular button in it which are numbered.
Can someone tell us what they are as before the engine rebuild one of them was sticking out which we pushed back in and we are wondering if that could have something to do with it. Can you also let us know how to trip those white buttons as we cant remeber which one it is so we may have to go throught them one by one. Would anyone have a schematic or picture of them or list showing what each numbered one is for. Thanks again for the help. Suggestion welcome for sure

That black box is a fusebox, the 12vdc comes from the battery switch, red and black wire. It feeds that box, and passes through to feed the digital switchbox (box with two studs on it up under the steering column)

Check the ignition switch for power in the start position when cranking, running, check the digital switchbox power (studs) as well. That will rule out a problem with that black box, I think. Check the kill switch connections as well, and the kill switch on the SHIFTER. Have you checked that one?

If that doesn't fix it.......it sounds like a timing issue, mixed up plug wires (is that even possible on this engine?) cam timing, possible damaged valvetrain, something like that. SO the very next thing I would do would be a compression/leakdown test on the engine.

Where is the shifter cut off you are talkng about not sure exactly what you are on about there.
The black box i was talking about has a load of white circular button on its face they are all numbered. the box is about 6inches by five inches. Really want to now if the button we pushed in may have been out showing the fault when the engine was working. Does anyone know how to check the button are working and whar each one is for.

Check the kill switch connections as well, and the kill switch on the SHIFTER. Have you checked that one?

My boat it is picky about the Neutral safety on the shifter, if it ever fails to start - all I usually need to do is push forward on the shifter while starting it for the boat to be able to verify it isn't starting in gear.  I haven't really taken it apart but it has to be in the shifter mechanism itself.

Another thing that may cause weird electrical issues is the in-line fuse coming from the Perko switch on the passenger (port) side of the engine compartment.

Check these and report back
