WOT RPM Range
« on: February 23, 2007, 14:58:11 pm »
Does anyone have an idea as to what the recommended wide open throttle RPM range should be?  I know my prop is aftermarket and am slightly concerned that I may be over-reving my engine when running at wide open throttle.  Appreciate the help.

Sorry, forgot to note that it's a 2000 Epic X-22.  Thanks.

I get to about 5800 rpm, but I have perfect pass and that restricts the WOT a bit. I could get near 6000 with the original three blade and before PP.

Pretty much ditto on Pete's stats.

Old prop just under 6k, new OJ XMP about 5800 RPM on an E21.

As long as you are 6k or under you should be good.  You don't want to lug it though either.  Some of the wakeboard guys intentionally bring up the RPM to keep the engine in the "sweet spot" at wakeboard speeds.  This takes away from the top end (run out of RPMs) but makes speed control much better at those speeds they are actually using.

What RPMs are you getting now that has you concerned?

I usually just cruise at about 35 mph out to the wakeboard spots on Amistad.  Then I believe i'm at about 3200rpm when pulling people (19-21mph).  although, i haven't really gotten to use my boat much yet.  I believe K-town uses these parameters on his SX also, but I might be wrong.

My wakeboarding RPM's are just fine. However, I tend to reach slightly over 5800 RPM's when I very briefly go WOT.  So I guess there is nothing to be concerned about.  Thanks for the help.

Brent,

Yeah it has been awhile.  First set...I thought your ankle was going to leave you off the board for some time.  Anyways, thats great.  I haven't been out yet, but I am taking it up to Broken Bow, OK in March.  Should be fun.  The boat is doing great, couldn't be happier.  Later.

On my 99 E22, stock everything except its a LH rotation vs RH rotation (pulls to the right when backing up), I hit between 5700-5900rpms.  Thats a rough guess, havent been on her since last summer, so its been waaay too long.  Snow skiing is finally dying off, so that means I have to finish my wood boat project and get working on my Epic and then a new motor for the Scarab.

That's awesome you got over 6,000 rpm's with Perfect Pass.  Your custom PP bracket must not inhibit the WOT range.

I saw a pic of Terry's location to mount the Perfect Pass Servor and mounted mine in the same location.

Not sure I've tried WOT since I installed PP last year.  Something to try and see if I can get all 6K.

I think it's an SX thing. Different transmission, 1.46 vs. 1.23. I'll bet that the rev limiter on the SX is a little higher than the other boats, if there even is one.  The engine doesn't care, it loves RPM. Just a guess, but these boats were the top of the line, and are finished out better than some other Toyota boats I've seen, including my first one that I purchased new. Don't get me wrong, they are all plush as hell, even now, especially for the time they were built. I I'm talking about minor crap like how much of the interior is carpeted, it's unreal in this boat, every part of the interiorl, all the way up past the rubrail.  How well routed the wiring is, places where raw fiberglass is painted black in barely visible places. There are a lot more labels on wiring on the '01 vs an '00. It's the same wires and connectors, but it's routed better, secured better and it's labeled better on the newer boat. That being said, my old boat is now perfectly routed and secured and labeled, been there done that.

I am experiencing all the age-old problems with ALL the boats, i.e. flakey gauges, alarms. No big whup, easy fix and I'll take pics and crap for you guys that are new and are freaking out because your OIL PRESSURE is too low or high or your engine is on fire.  Two wires, one fuse, no more headeaches.

One thing this boat does have is the diode jumpers on certain devices connected to the digital switchbox, like the horn. If you have a boat with the millenium dash (little switches, not rockers) then you have the box that is connected to the switch panel. It has a bunch of orange wires attached to it, that are the outputs to make your courtesy lights, bilge pump, nav lights etc. work when you push a membrane button.

The panels can be flakey, i.e. push the horn button and the entire panel resets. This is a result of a voltage spike that occurs when a coil is deenergized, if it is not filtered it will reset the panel. A simple diode filter across the horn or other coils (motors, relays, solenoids) prevents the problem. It was a factory fix, I never saw exactly how they implemented it until I saw my new boat. It's something you can easily do yourself for minimal cost, details to follow.

My X22's RPM's didn't change with perfect pass -- I still hit exactly 6k at full throttle.  I had to disassemble all of my Accuski stuff, though...so I wonder if that somehow affected how mine is installed.

Cal, just curious what prop are you running on your boat? I'm at 48mph at WOT and 6125rpm with a 4 blade stainless Cutter. I'm going to call Acme Wed. I want to bring those rpm's down to 6k just to be safe. No Accu or PP.

Took my SX up to WOT (6050 rpm's) today for the first time since I installed the Perfect Pass last year.  The Perfect Pass bracket doesn't impact my WOT - way cool!
