Horn?
« on: March 24, 2007, 17:48:01 pm »
This is one of those low priority items until some boat driver appears to be heading directly at me.

I've tried pushing the horn button on the dash as few times in 3+ years with no result.

I haven't done that much investigating since it's never on my priority list.  Can someone tell me where the horn is located?  It there a breaker or fuse that I need to check?

I'm on horn #3.

On my E21 it is up underneath the driver's kickwell.  If you move your driver's seat all the way back and crawl underneath it will be toward the center of the boat.  Once you visualize it there I can get it out easier by going in through the passanger seat storage area.  There is a fuse for it but that was never the issue for me.

Carry an air horn if yours is broken, water cops around here will ticket you if it is broken.

I've carried around an air horn these many years for that very reason.

Hope I can get the onboard one to work at some point.

It's up under the dash on both my boats. Standard junk automotive horn. Get one at a boneyard or Zona del Auto. Sometimes, you can spray WD40 down into them and they'll start working. Don't do it unless you want WD40 everywhere, though.

Found it.

I called Fiamm (manufacturer of the horn) and they said they would replace it with their 519 series (marine grade) at no charge.

Kudo's for companies willing to stand behind their products!

Received the replacement horn, installed it and still no sound.

Decided to do further testing so I connected the horn direct to the battery and the old one worked.

Does anyone have any ideas on fuses, breakers or horn switch troubleshooting?

Thanks,

Brad

Well, the horn is connected to the DECC box, that particular button is momentary instead of latching. I'd put a meter across the two wires to the horn and push the button, see if you have 12vdc there. If not, the DECC may be bad. I'd probably just get another momentary pushbutton and wire it up to the horn and put it somewhere unobtrusive.

It's odd that all my other switches work fine.

Could the HornDiodeJumper be bad?

I'll do the meter test and see what turns up.

Thanks,
