Audio wire routing
« on: April 11, 2007, 15:47:18 pm »
Hey everybody !! Ive been gleening info and ideas from everyone here for the past year. Bought my S22 last spring and love it. I wan to add a sound system, and don't know where to run the wiring between the amps, which I will put in the storage compartment in the walkway, and the drivers side where I will install the sub in the footrest. Also I think I will have to drill holes in the deck under the tower as I don't see any from underneath. Any help will be appreciated.

For the RCA's and turnon wire, I went around the bow, on the inside of the lower part under the seat cushions. I had bolts through there for the bow filler cushion supports. I mounted the amps on boards that I made from Home Depot cutting boards carpeted with Lowes marine carpet, close to a match. I cut away a square of carpet and glued an MDF board about 6x8 to the hull, screwed the board to that.

For power, I came up from the bilge into the storage compartment, there is an access hole. I put a second battery in there. The boat I'm talking about is my D drive epic 22, battery in the floor.

There's plenty of room for a sub under the drivers foot panel, made a nice box.

Welcome to the site, Toyboat.  I ran my RCA and remote wires around the bow to the amps in the storage locker.  The wires are tied together with zip-ties and pulled tight because I didn't want to add holes.  They rarely get in the way and can still be tucked under the fiberglass and out of the way.  My sub is in the storage compartment, because I didn't want to mess with the heater (at the driver's feet).  I mounted all my amplifiers to the sub box, but you could also mount them to the carpeted partition boards that are at the fore and aft of that compartment.

The bilge access hole Pete is talking about is in the right-hand corner of that compartment (it may be behind the bulkhead, I can't remember because I removed mine just days after I bought the boat).

I installed a second battery in front of the foreward partition board.  Pete mounted his behind the aft partition board.   You can find the thread "help me rebuild my sound system" to see pics of the work that I just completed.

Let me know what other specific questions you have and hopefully we can help.

Correction:
"The bilge access hole Pete is talking about is in the LEFT-hand corner of that compartment (it may be behind the bulkhead, I can't remember because I removed mine just days after I bought the boat). "

Thanks guys ! Wire routings that you suggested are what I was thinking. Didn't want to drill holes if there was already access. Weather here in NoCal is getting close to great. Some are already out. In another week I will be too! With gas over $3 I am so glad I picked the Toyota, I had a feeling that fuel savings would make a difference in the end. A little less flash, a lot more time on the water!!

I'm going to add a battery behind the partition in the walkway storage. Is there any reason that I can't leave the partition out ? Seems like the battery  will prevent anything from sliding back in there. Is there any other purpose for the partition?  I will use 4 GA wire for the runs between the battery relay and the forward battery if that is sufficient.

I can't think of any reason, other than it would look a lot better if the battery was behind the partition.  The partition has no other purpose, and is very easy to remove -- just a few screws.  I used 4-ga also, the shop told me it would be fine.

Cal, thanks for the fast reply! I'm ready to pull wire, and put it together. All low end audio but most important is all the wiring will be in place for upgrades later. Girlfriend just doesn't understand all the work. " What's wrong with the stereo thats in it?" Um... it's going to be a bit LOUDER!!
