Trailer Brakes - master cylinder empty
« on: April 24, 2007, 02:31:32 am »
Starting to get the boat ready for action. I have been delaying taking the trailer in for service for over a month, but decided to check the master brake fluid cylinder last night. There was only the black plastic cap that popped off, with no secondary cover on the inside. There was no brake fluid present and whatever was there was caked dry. I have no idea how long it has been empty, but the trailer has been sitting over winter for the past 6 months. I am guessing this is a problem, but any insight into how bad of a problem would be helpful. Thanks.

I would start by trying to clean out the reservoir as best you can. The more debris and gunk you can get out of the reservoir the better.
Next fill the reservoir and bleed the brakes. It will take a long time to get all the air out of the lines etc. Keep going until you get clean fluid and no air. Check the maintenance section of the site for instructions on how to bleed the brakes. If all goes well get a new inner cap and you are good to go.

I'll take more pics today;) My new trailer had the exact same brake line snap off near where it enters the caliper. it was the right rear wheel. I got a piece of replacement line (6') and fixed it, but I have to bleed the brakes today.

It is at the trailer mechanic and he says the master cylinder in the actuator is not working. He didn't think the brakes had been functioning for a long time, but they were not locked up causing resistance or any damage. He was ordering the part ($90 he thinks) and then will put it back together. Hopefully, that will be the fix. Otherwise I am running it without brakes and getting the season going!
