Bimini top mod

I am thinking of cutting a strip in my bimini top and sewing a zipper in so that my extended pylon can goe threw the bimini. Has anybody els done this, will it work right still.

My original bimini that came with my epic 22 (windshield mount, no straps) had just such a zipper. It was 8 in long or so.
