Let me start by saying that I know very little about the Moomba boats. However, I will say this answer will apply to any current production boat vs. Toyota discussion. I will also preface that I am biased and 100% happy with the Toyota boat. Let's start with a quick Pro/Con discussion (anyone feel free to add to these)
Pros for Toyota boats
Well built
Best fuel efficiency (by at least 30%)
Best engine (Lexus) for comparable HP
Exceptional resource for work/help with your boat (
www.epicmarine.com)
Unique, only one on your lake type boat.
Cons
No authorized dealers to take your boat for service
Parts/accessories are available, but not as easy to get as other mainstream companies
Trailer parts are also only available through Ameri-trail
Big picture, you will not find a nicer boat (DD or VD) for the price anywhere! The downside is that you don't have a local dealer to take your boat to and say "fix this." Most of us have learned to do our own servicing and mechanical work. You will find a guide for just about anything you can think of doing on this webpage. I have never worked on a boat until my Toyota and I have winterized, changed all the fluids, spark plugs, installed perfect pass pro, and upgraded my stereo myself. I probably saved over 1,000.00 on labor, but I was willing to learn as I went, so it made sense for me. As for mechanical problems, the Toyota's are amazing. I don't know that you will find any statistics, but from our discussions, they seem to holdup in all conditions. So, if you don't plan on doing your own work and have a local dealer that sells Moomba's and you trust him with your money and family, consider the Moomba. If you don't mind learning to work on your own boat or don't have a local dealer for the boat you are considering buying, do yourself a favor and buy the Toyota. Good luck, and welcome to the site.
