Ok guys i need your help
« on: May 19, 2007, 23:47:59 pm »
So I am currently deciding between two boats, a 2001 Moomba Kamberra, and a 2000 Epic X22.  First off what is the wake like on the x22 with the stock ballast system, and second, what would you guys pick.  Keep in mind we use our boat for two things kicking back with family and friends, and wakeboarding.  Thanks

Let me start by saying that I know very little about the Moomba boats.  However, I will say this answer will apply to any current production boat vs. Toyota discussion.  I will also preface that I am biased and 100% happy with the Toyota boat.  Let's start with a quick Pro/Con discussion (anyone feel free to add to these)

Pros for Toyota boats
Well built
Best fuel efficiency (by at least 30%)
Best engine (Lexus) for comparable HP
Exceptional resource for work/help with your boat (www.epicmarine.com)
Unique, only one on your lake type boat.

Cons
No authorized dealers to take your boat for service
Parts/accessories are available, but not as easy to get as other mainstream companies
Trailer parts are also only available through Ameri-trail

Big picture, you will not find a nicer boat (DD or VD) for the price anywhere!  The downside is that you don't have a local dealer to take your boat to and say "fix this."  Most of us have learned to do our own servicing and mechanical work.  You will find a guide for just about anything you can think of doing on this webpage.  I have never worked on a boat until my Toyota and I have winterized, changed all the fluids, spark plugs, installed perfect pass pro, and upgraded my stereo myself.  I probably saved over 1,000.00 on labor, but I was willing to learn as I went, so it made sense for me.  As for mechanical problems, the Toyota's are amazing.  I don't know that you will find any statistics, but from our discussions, they seem to holdup in all conditions.  So, if you don't plan on doing your own work and have a local dealer that sells Moomba's and you trust him with your money and family, consider the Moomba.  If you don't mind learning to work on your own boat or don't have a local dealer for the boat you are considering buying, do yourself a favor and buy the Toyota.  Good luck, and welcome to the site.

Well I would go with the Epic.  I love my X-22.  The boat has a nice wake!  The boat was Toyota's premier wakeboat prior to them making the SX.  You can't go wrong w/ a Toyota/Lexus product (if it has been maintained well).  I'm a big Toyota fan and these boats are sick!  Cyclone will be able to tell you more techinical stuff about the boat than I can, but I'm sure he will point you in the same direction.  Good luck....

Consider Gas $3.50 gal + toyotas are really good on gas probably the best out there for a 300 hp towboat. I have taken my epic out 4 times so far this season for 2 hours at a time and have used 1/4 tank thats like 8 hours of towing. I am more than happy with my epic that I have owned for a year now. Dont let it scare you with not having a dealler that will work on it learn to do it yourself and know it got done right.  AWESOME TOW BOATS  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

My bro in law (Festivus on this site) has now gone over to the Malibu 247 dark side, but he had the Kamberra and sold it to buy a Toyota S22. For fit and finish, driveability, etc. he always said there was no comparison. I rode in the Kamberra a few times and there is no comparison. The Toyota is better in every way that matters.

There are dealers who do great work on Epics.

In Wisconsin, Skipper Buds has all of the Toyota Marine equipment and they can fix anything just as if Toyota Marine was still open.  They have techs who have been through the Toyota Marine training, etc.   If dealer support is important to you, check the dealer contact page on this site and call the one near you to see whether they'll be helpful.

Gotta agree that these are great boats.  All of the comments above are on the mark.  With regard to fit and finish, the Epic rivals many of the boats that are being built today!

Also, if you're in the NW, Ski Masters Watersports in Seattle (ok Kenmore), WA is really good with the Epics.  There are a couple that are on the north end of Lake WA all the time, and I know there are more in the surrounding area too.
