Questions on purchasing '99 epic x-22
« on: March 08, 2004, 01:46:56 am »
I'm looking at purchasing a '99 epic x-22. The boat has 120 hrs., tower, and stock rear ballast.  This site is a great source of information for the toyotas, so I figured you guys would have a good idea of what I should offer.  He is asking $24,700, which I think is a little high.  Also, I'm open to any advice on options to look for or things to check out on the boat before buying.  Thanks.

Hi Kyle,
120 hrs? It's still new.Just make sure to test drive it and check that everything works.I'd thnk you could get the boat for maybe $21 or $22k.It would be worth it.I speak for all others on here,it's easier to have fun when you don't have to worry about your boat breaking down! It's a good boat!Keep us informed.

That's the same price range I had in mind.  I will definitely be test driving it before purchase.  Thanks for the reply.  I'll keep you posted.

Kyle-  pricing on Toyotas is really difficult...you get asking prices all over the spectrum. What it ultimately comes down to is how badly the seller wants to get rid of it.

Just a few months ago I bought my 2001 x22 with 185 hours for about $25k.  It's in really good condition and came with LOTS of goodies, and this price, to me, was a good deal.

If they are asking 24,700, they are expecting to get $24k for the boat. I would say that if the boat is in really good condition, that is a fair (maybe slightly-high) price.

Something to consider:  we're coming into prime boat-buying season, and it's harder to convince sellers that you should be getting a better deal.  You should do whatever you're comfortable with -- If you can't live without this particular boat, need a boat now, and worry about another one coming around in the near future... and are able to pay $24k, you should go ahead and do it -- you'll be happy regardless.

Good luck!

You will get more out of 1 summer of Epic ownership than whatever the cost difference between buying one now or next year. I kick myself for not doing it ten years prior. It would have been a Barefoot Nautique or something back then, and dayglo wetsuits!

I test drove the boat on Friday and came to an agreement on price.  I will be picking it up sometime next week after the paperwork is complete.  I can't wait!!!  I'll post some pics when I get a chance.

Congrats, you will not be sorry. There is nothing on that boat that you can't fix. That is one thing I forgot to mention, if you can change oil in a car you can do almost any maintenance on that boat. The engine is easy to access, and the modular seats and removeable aluminum floor panels make it easy to expose the entire bilge for cleaning and maintenance. It's about time to get it clean and inspected and ready to take on the water. I'm going to do my boat this weekend, I'll take some pics so you know how to pull the seats and stuff. You definitely want to make sure that the boat has no leaks, etc. before you take it out. I would say that there is a good chance the bilge pump is inop, they wired them backwards for a couple of years. See the pics on the how to page. You can replace the failed pump easily and reverse the wires at the switch. You should look closely at the ballast system too, the bag is in the trunk. Take some digital pics and post them if you see something you have questions about.

Thanks for the info.  I'll definitely take a look at the things you mentioned.  I think the bilge pump was working but worth checking out.  This site is great.
