Sub in footpanel with heater
« on: March 03, 2008, 23:25:22 pm »
Decided to see if a box would fit up under the dash, low and behold, my 10" box for my old epic 22 fits pretty well. I relocated the heater and vent, and will cut a hole in the left side of the carpeted panel for the 10. Here are a couple of quick pics before the rain started:)

The box and footrest board stick out about 1.5 in past where they did before, but it is not obtrusive for the driver and well worth it. I could have pushed the box back farther if I notched it for the ballast tank vent, but there is wiring and hoses, steering cable, etc.  back there that  need a bit of room as well. Here's a pic of the detail of the hose connections on the heater. It was mounted flat to the deck, I just screwed it to the box.

You could always invert your box (bottom end up) to follow the walkthrough angle then bolt it or secure it to the walkthrough wall or the back of the right bow seat. It will leave enough room for all the electrical, ballast, steering, and heater plumbing. I was gonna do this with my SX but I lost my desire for a huge stereo in my boats. I guess I'm getting old.

Not the best picture, but here is how I installed my solobaric sub, 600w amp, and capacitor.  The box w/ amp mounted on top fit perfectly under the dash and I slid it towards the back.  Then used 2 L-brackets to mount to the floor.

Here's what I ended up doing. I reworked the stock plastic support so that it would work with the heater and sub box.  I didn't want to drill any more holes into my ballast tank. I'm gonna finish the panel with vinyl after I put a coat of resin on it. There's space under the Momo trim ring for a LED strip:) The speaker is  a 10W6

I covered the trim panel with some leftover vinyl from my last boat. It happens to match the upholstery in my boat, see how it holds up.

WOW! That looks very nice...

I WAS feeling like I had a productive weekend just getting a zerk fitting in the rudder assemble and greasing it. Well, the steering is now silky smooth....

Wait...my monitor is vibrating...Pete, you must be testing.....

I went a different route on the sub placement.  I wanted to try my hand at some custom fiberglass and a year later I came up with the 'ugly woofer project' that is custom fit to the useless space in the forward section of the port locker.

Long story short I suck at fiberglass work, even worse at filler work and absolutely horrible at painting and stenciling.   ;D  Good thing is the sub is out of sight and out of the way so nobody needs to see how shabby the work is.

The one one cool thing about the sub is it fits like a puzzle piece up in the hull so no mounting hardware is required.  Powered by a RF 2002 bridged the little 10" Punch does quite all right.

Now just need to clean up the wiring and finish the second battery project.  Good thing it is snowing in Seattle, gives me a few extra days to wrap up the winter projects I put off till spring.   :o

Freelance,
That's actually quite artistic. One could say you've taken inspiration from the Experience Music Project. ;D

Well, today I put some serious work into the ol' stereo on my Epic.  My stereo was already ok, but my 4 tower speakers were acting sort of wierd last time I was out.  During "high volume" moments, the tower speakers were cutting out when large bass notes would hit, even with the engine running. During normal play, the left 2 speakers seemed to play highs and the right 2 played mids...very wierd.

So...today I ripped out the ENTIRE stereo, what a bi$%$ that was.  For a small moment I thought "my god...what did I just do?  Anyhow, I bought a dual amp wiring kit and another capacitor (.5 Farad) and got to work!

Here is how I set it up:

I ran Monster cable RCAs (x2 sets) from the head unit to my equilizer (just under the head unit) then all the way around the front of the bow (way up underneath out of sight) to the storage locker.  These go to my Kenwood amp that runs the tower speakers.  Then I ran 4 gauge from the battery w/ 100amp inline fuse to the storage locker right into a Scosche power splitter.  From this runs 2 (7? awg) wires.  1 goes through the .5 cap to the kenwood. The other goes under the floor and over to the 2.4 farad cap which then goes to my 600w Diamond audio amp, then to the Kicker solobaric sub.  I also spent some time cleaning up the wires under the dash, so my sub enclosure actually slid very easily back (probably 3-4 more inches than it used to) giving the driver mucho leg room now.  Oh, for the tower speaker issues I had, it was due to my equilizer being incorrectly installed by the previous owner.  When I took my boat back to the storage, I CRANKED it up.  All joking aside, this is the loudest stereo I have ever owned!  I must say that the install was challenging, mostly because getting up inside the storage locker to mount amps, caps and run wires is hard on the old back and sides, but now it looks/runs very nice.

I will post pictures in the near future.

Now, here is a question...  I wanted to do the DECC power wire upgrade today as well.  I got 10 awg wire and a 40 amp inline fuse.  I had planned to run it to the battery (-) and the perko (+), but when I looked on the back of the DECC all I saw were 2 wire looms that were soldered to the back of it.  So am I supposed to run the power wires directly to that thing somehow?  That project is on standby until I figure out how to do it correctly.  Anyhow, a long post but a rewarding project overall. See ya.

Guys, nice work!!  I'm especially impressed by Freelance -- he tries and play off like he doesn't have any clue what he's doing, then he goes and pulls off something like that.  and TOTALLY redeems himself....  YEAH!!!  Seriously though, Pete, that looks insane.  Aaron, I'm with Steve -- first thing I thought of was the EMP.  It certainly is a creative use of space.  Looking forward to hearing it at the 2008 Epic Roundup!  Nice work.  Here are links to what I did this year... had to get very creative because of the bulkhead that Supra installs for rigidity.  I don't think I ever showed-off the final product to you guys.  I think this thread is the first time ever getting props on wakeworld:

Pete,
As usual, nice job. Although I do have to say that I think you've just got too much time on your hands. Does your family talk to you and feed you through a slot in your garage door?

Cal,
Saw your speaker thread on washingtonwake.com. That was a pretty impressive job you did.

Flyn2001,
Looking forward to those pics. I think we might just have a friendly joust going on here.

Aaron,
I like it the more I look at it!

Anyone have any decibel readings?
