Gage wiring
« on: March 27, 2008, 16:49:40 pm »
I have now run 6 gage wires to the DECC.  The ground goes to the battery and the positive goes to the Perko switch.  I am just waiting to get a 5 amp fuse today to finish it.  My question is....  Do you replace the current supply wires or do you just add the new ones?  It's a little confusing trying to figure out which wires to take out.  Seems like I could just add the new wires and be fine.  Is this OK?

Six gauge wire and a 5 amp fuse? I'd use a bigger fuse, the wire can handle 80 amps or so. You can power other accessories off that feed, you should make the fuse big enough to support more stuff. Maybe 30-50 amps or so. Put the fuse at the battery end.

I got it.  I used a 30 amp fuse and left the original wires on there. Everything worked great. I also replaced the plugs, cleaned the  MAS and the air filter so now the boat runs better than ever and everything is working.  For the first time I actually have a depth gage, imagine that.  Thanks for the help guys, you fixed another one!  BTW I used the NGK standard 00 Tundra plugs and they work fine. Only cost me $16.  Last time it was $100...

Glad to hear your boat is back in top shape! I am fixing my gauge issues as we speak, here's a pic of the harness I made. I used 8 gau. wire because it's more than enough and it's a relatively easy and cheap to obtain. I used tinned marine wire, and spliced in a 30 amp inline fuse near the battery. I'm going to run the wire up the starboard gunwale to a spot where I'll mount the buss bar shown in the pic. Not sure where, yet. I'll run 10 ga wires to the decc, and use the buss bar to power accessories, like the Harman Kardon drive and play control box. Can't beat that thing for 25$.

Pete,

That wiring harness looks like you bought it off the shelf somewhere (nice work).  I bet you could sell one of those to almost everyone on this site.  Like always, nice work.

It's an Ipod controller, see the stereo post for pics. They have been selling them cheap lately.

I'm ready to do this upgrade on my SX.  Where is the best place to locate and purchase these items?

What length do I need?

Thanks!

I'm sorry guys, but i'm an electrical system buffoon!!

Is the upgrade stuff in this thread for the DECC issues?? or something else?  When my boat is cruising along, I get the flashing battery indication on my dash computer (DECC).  When this happens, I am unable to monitor anything else unless I pull the power back.  Is this the same thing you are talking about?

If so, is there any way someone could post a very simplified version of the fix?  I attempted this fix once before, but honestly had NO damn clue what I was doing, thus gave up in about 30 seconds.

Cyclone, seems like you might have a real good handle on this problem.  Any specific guidance.  Parts list. Where should I start, etc. I would LOVE to see a "How To" in our maintenance section on this.  Thanks for any help.

I just finished this modification and posted up pics on this thread:

If you need more specific pictures let me know and I can go snap them for you.

I had the same problem with the voltage flashing low when I throttled up and now I no longer have this issue.

so now that I have done the wiring and the voltage issue is resolved, is there a way to calibrate my gages?  The depth gage doesn't work, the fuel gage always says I have 27 gallons on the digital, the air and water temps are way off... I don't even know where to begin fixing that stuff.  any suggestions?
