need to lift my trailer!
« on: April 03, 2008, 03:48:28 am »
I can't get into my driveway w/o putting blocks under my tires to lift the back end enough to clear the sidwalk.  Then when I get back to the back yard it digs up my lawn..  I can use a lower hitch, but it is a pain in the butt to switch out every time I go out.  I did a search without results on this topic.  Has anyone done this? if so, does it still trailer good., and how did you do it?

The height of the trailer at the back is bad, I also have discussed raising my trailer. The simplest soulution I could think to do is to put a taller tire on. I had to put spacers in behind my rim to push the tire away from the inside of the wheel well. This helped some. I also have air bags on the rear axle of my truck, it is amazing how I can alter my rear trailer height by dumping and filling the air bags. I think the next thing I would do is put air bags on the trailer axles, this would let me raise my trailer when I wanted to and still be low when I wanted to unload the boat at the lake.

I write this with some igonorance, as I have not actually looked at the axle design of our trailers.  We may be able to put an "add-a-leaf" or even a leaf tension kit on the current springs to help lift the trailer off the axle more.  I have the same prob w/ my trailer.  I also did the drop hitch and the air shocks on my 4-runner, but a "V" shaped bump in the road will most likely get me every time.  I don't even attempt to drive up some drive ways.  I plan on putting some effort into fixing this in the near future since I need to service my trailer anyway.

The problem I see in using extra leaf springs is the center of the two wheels.  There is a piece wellded on there conecting the two leafs, and a bolt going through that to keep the two tires from wiggin out.  I think if you added on to that also, you can add a leaf or put the axle on top of the leafs which will give you a couple of inches. I just don't know if this will make the trailer wobble and make me crash. :-[

I had a problem with my 5th wheel trailer and lifted truck. You can flip the axles to underneath the spring to gain some clearance. It shouldn't affect the handling of the trailer. Short of that you would have to have the spring perches lengthened which could get pricey. Trailer repair places flip the axles all the time. My 5th wheel cost around $200.00.

What about using one of those adjustable drop hitches? You could drop the tongue before backing in.

Ya, I bought an adjustable drop hitch from harbor frieght and put it on.  It still scraped, and then I scraped on the tongue also.  Put a 1/4 inch deep gouge in the drive way with it. >:( I think the only option is to do the axel thing. ???

I was thinking about lifting the trailer, which to me doesn't seem to pose a problem unless your tow vehicle has to back too far into the water to compensate for the extra height. That's not a problem with a travel trailer, but might be a problem for you unless your tow vehicle is lifted.

I think air bags are the solution and I have been planning on doing it for a couple years now but keep procrastinating.  I have them on my truck and they are great. If any of you do it, let me know how it goes..

We noticed this immediately, first time bringing the Epic home from the dealer I suggested we pull up a driveway then back down the hill to my house.  Ooops, bottomed the rear end of the trailer out immediately and spent probably an hour getting it unhooked and jacking the tongue up so we could get it unhooked.  Embarrassing to say the least, and on our brand new boat.  Lets just say everyone is very mindful of the rear trailer height since then.
