Testing Propellers
« on: April 17, 2008, 20:06:27 pm »
I spoke to ACME today about getting a new prop for my boat.  They were very helpful and suggested I buy two and keep the one that works best.  I bought a model # 653 and model # 1449.  I saw where some people had used the 653 before but no mention of the 1449.  The gentleman I spoke with told me that he did not know of the 1449 being used on a Toyota.  I am excited to see what the results will be. I am looking for hole shot and ACME told me the 1449 might be the best overall.  Time will tell.
I'm gonna get the WOT/Speed with both props and post this later.

I have an SX 22 and put on an O.J. 340 XMP prop that is 13 x 12.5 left hand 3 blade brass CNC machined 1 1/8" shaft diameter. and it is awesome out of the hole.
It is very similar to the ACME only cheaper i think.  I got it at Props by Nettle  (512) 837-7707. 825 Wagon Trl, Austin, TX 78758 ...

He can get you one for $390 + freight.

Before that I had a stainless 4 blade "Cutter" prop and the new one is way better.

The guys at Acme were really great.  They gave me a price of $390 each and I am sending back the #653.  The specs on the one I kept and am still going to use is as such...

#1449   13.00x11.00   .120 cup   3 blade    1 1/8"   LH

The hole shot has improved noticeably.  Right now WOT is at 5600 but I won't know the real top speed until I install Perfect Pass. I just received the Perfect Pass yesterday and hope to install it before the weekend.  It is simply amazing how .5 in pitch and .06 in cup can change the characteristics enough for even a novice like myself to notice.  Even people who ride with me weekly noticed!

Also I used a regular gear puller from Oreilly Auto Parts which saved some money.  Thanks again to whoever put together the stubborn prop PDF because I ended up heating it with a map gas torch.  Scares the hell out of you when the damn thing pops off!  Don't worry I kept the nut in place so it wouldn't slam to the ground.

I got the 525 a few years ago and works much better than stock OJ. Looks like it kinda splits the difference between the 2 you tried.

I think my boat only tops out around 35 or so now, maybe less but it jumps out of the hole. loaded down with  2500lbs of ballast and pulling at 21mph runs at 4500 rpm i think.  sucks the gas but the wake is sick!

Sure seems to be a lot of different props going on to our boats.  Is this because of different uses of the boat?

My Acme prop is...

543ACME       13  LH      11.5 x 1"       (.80 CUP)       3 Blade         It was ~$323.85  in Jun 2006

I'm not even sure what the differences in performance are for 4 vs. 3 blade,  LH vs. RH,   or CUP size (I had to say that!).  I just know that my boat at WOT doesn't go over about ~40mph, although I haven't opened it up on a perfect glass water lake yet either.

Flyn, the only difference in the 525 and the 543 is the bore size. Mine's a 1-1/8" and yurs is 1"

I also have the acme 525 on my S22 and it's a great all around prop.  I've had has much ballast as 2500 lbs when I wakeboarded and with no ballast the top end is around 41 mph at 5300 rpm but it never sees that lol. Now days I ride the sky ski, no ballast and loving the gas savings of this boat although the X22 did even better on gas.

Guys at Acme said that the 3 versus 4 blade debate is no longer an issue due to there being so much
accuracy with their manufacturing now with the 3 blade props.  Yeah Blindside I think our props are comparable, only a slight difference in pitch and cup.  I believe the biggest improvement is the .120 cup size more area for improved performance and they decrease the pitch to compensate for the increased cup size.  Never new propellers could be so interesting!
