MAF Sensor and Throttle Body Valve
« on: May 09, 2008, 14:35:40 pm »
Folks may remember Toyotafreak's thread where he discussed these 2 items, showed pictures, etc. I think the thread started with a gas issue. I bought some spray cleaners awhile back but my first opportunity to address them came last weekend. Both are very easy to access. My throttle body valve was FILTHY, especially if the one shown in TF's pictures was considered to be dirty!! There was buildup all over the valve, some of it came off in dime size pieces. The spray cleaner simply melts it off so it was no problem to eliminate. Follow the advice re: placement of a towel to catch the mess.

I almost hoped the MAF sensor would be as bad, as that might explain why my fuel consumption seems to be a higher than others on the site. However, it was relatively clean. Of course, I sprayed it down anyway to clean out the minor discoloration. While I was at it, I decided to spray the flame arrestor. It has had a dark look to it every since I have owned the boat. I first sprayed it with the throttle body cleaner - nothing. Then, what the heck, I sprayed it with the MAF cleaner. Amazing what came out of it. The towel I had under it became black. I turned it over a few times and kept spraying, putting it on different sections of the towel, until nothing else came out. It looks absolutely brand new.

Of course, as always I was in a rush so I only had time to take it out for as quick spin. First observation, it didn't have the rich smell of unburned fuel it has had of late. Idle seemed a little smoopther when first started but nothing major. The throaty "big cam" sound it has always had and I have always loved seemed a little smoother and quieter but that was about it. No way to measure fuel consumption on a 10 minute ride.

I didn't expect miracles as my boat has always run great but I feel better knowing the air pathway is now clean. Why the MAF sensor was not dirty being between the flame arrestor and the throttle body valve is a mystery to me.

where is the throttle body valve?  I cleaned the MAF sensor and the flame arrestor but don't know about the valve..  cleaning the MAF sensor seems to have fixed my issues but it was filthy so I can only assume the the valve is too...  can you tell me where it is located?

It is at the opposite end of the air intake from the flame arrestor. Remove the hard plastic air intake and the butterfly valve is right there- very easy to access.
