Slight Drip from Engine -- Need Advice
« on: May 25, 2008, 23:06:03 pm »
I changed my oil and fuel filters yesterday, hooked up to the fake-a-lake to the E22, fired up the engine and checked for leaks. Nothing from the filters and thermostat area, but I noticed a slight drip (drop every 10-15 seconds) coming from the engine (driver's side behind the alternator). I can't tell for sure, but it looks like it is coming from the location of the arrow in the attached picture. Any ideas? It looks like there is a gasket under the bolt, and it might be coming from there. I know the engine was drained good over the winter because I actually dropped the freeze plug and it took me awhile to fish it out from the hull.

That is cover plate to water jacket. Remove and clean , Buy permatex #2 or 36 red or blue . Follow directions and reseal.

Thanks, Capt. Rick. Is this an urgent repair or can it wait until the end of the season? It seems to be only 3-4 drips a minute at idle. Thanks.

This happened to me last year. Thought I had cracked the block over the winter. Toyota dealer sold me a tube of black sealer made just for that application. They said to be very careful to clean off all the old sealer from the plug and the block. Took an hour to take it off clean it up with a wire brush and reseal. You could probably leave it for the summer but I noticed the water on mine was running down some wiring below the leak.

You're right -- it seems to be dripping on the alternator wiring. I thought it might have been caused since the water pressure from the fake a lake and hose is higher than normal operation. I'll run it at the lake and take a look, but I'll get some sealer coming. Its not going to get better on its own. Thanks
