Is changing the oil before winter really important?
« on: September 06, 2008, 04:29:34 am »
I've always done it in the springtime, but i have recently read that it should be done as part of the winterization process.
I've been told it is essential in order to remove all the contaminants from the oil. I wouldn't think it would be an issue, providing you changed it yearly of course but i don't know.

I've been using mobil one 5w30 with an OEM filter, but will be making the switch this year to Amsoil ASL 5w30 and EA0 oil filter. Simply due to the fact the eao filter is made of synthetic media and not paper.

Any help would be appreciated.

Breakaway's explanation made a lot of sense to me when I asked the same question. Why leave old oil with acids and sludge in the oil pan all winter? I go to Walmart and buy a 5 qt jug of their oil for $10. I put it in and take a 15 minute cruise while distributing the Stabil I also add to the fuel and then finish the winterization. At the end I fog the cylinders and install a set of old plugs. I take a 15 minute cruise in the spring to capture any water that may be in the system in the water separator/fuel filter, burn off the foggng oil and and and capture any water that accumulated over the winter in the oil system. Then I change the fuel filter, oil and oil filter and install the good plugs again (or new ones). It is a $10 investment that makes me feel better.
Don't be so humble, you're not that great.
