Very Cool- I learned alot!  I've always had questions regarding my setup so this and the video's posted on their site were great.

I noticed in your post that PSS recommends water cooling with prop speeds above 12kts, which mine doesn't have.  I am not sure who set it up on my boat this way but its never had a problem.  On the troubleshooting section of the site it made reference to a high pitch sound having something to do with this.  At times, I've noticed a high pitch sound, I guess I'll have to run a water line this summer.

Tenn,

And I do cherish choice words from other users like... "but its Never had a problem". That maybe one picked a sound piece of equipment.

Do you get much water in your bilge?

Thanks for the input.

Frugal -

I hate sounding "naive" on this forum of all places but the water line was something i was un-aware of, I'll try and squeeze in the time to mess with it this summer.  But if not,  guess I'll go with the what I've done the past 3 years - which is run it without.  Ignorace is Bliss (not really) I just hate knowing its not setup the way it was supposed to be.

Like I said I've owned the boat for 3 years and never had a problem so I have no doubt that its a great peice of equipment and worth every dime you spent.

As far was water in my bilge:  This past summer I can't recall much of it at all so its not something i can really speak of.

Tenn,

your feedback was quite encouraging, and I value your input. The fact your boat never had the water line hooked-up, and the PSS is surviving nicely, speaks volumes of conservative engineering, and a reliable product.

Hey the old saying, "if it ain't broke don't fix it" goes along way. So don't; although I may have pushed that thinking a little too far by not addressing my own Shaft Seal sooner. My experience with the PSS is obviously very new. Your the guy with lots of hours on a PSS and the voice of experience.

We've had the boat out a couple of times, and I don't hear the high pitch squeal. Maybe adding a water line to yours will help... and something to consider.

regards,

OK my prop shaft seal is shot, been leaking water into the bilge for 2 years now and finally dad is ready to cough up the $$ to pay to fix it.  Told him about the PSS and he's willing to spend the $$ for it.

Question is what exactly do I need?  I can install it no problem in a weekend Im sure but what parts do I need?  Do I need to repack the original seal then install the PSS or just install the PSS (what Im thinking is right).  Pretty sure I can use the same part number PSS you did as the DD boats are all the same AFAIK.

As for the puller, any chance I could throw you a few bucks to make me one or lend me yours?  Where in WA are you located, I live in Seattle but drive to Spokane often and the boat stays in Lake Coeur d'alene in north ID year round.  Drop me a PM when you get a chance!  Goal is to get this stuff ordered within a few days (even if it means paying a premium) to install it next sunday in ID when Im with the boat next.

Thanks

The pss model is a water injected model. FIrst see if the unit has a model witout injecting water. Let them know the engine turns 6000 rpm and is a 1.2 ratio. Also you need to remove the plastic shaft packing nuts and sleeve. The pss is a complete part. Also there is not alot of room from the inside of the shaft to the coupling. The coupling will take you the weekend to remove( good luck ) It is easier to remove the motor nd slide shaft inside after removin g prop and key.

It is just easier to repack the shaft corretly then to install a pss coupling.

Epic installed 2 in a boat and there still was water that would com ein the boat when the seals vibrated.

Capt Rick

Ps your shaft is 1 inch outside diameter on direct drive.  1 1/8 on vdrive.

To supply water if needed you open the elbow drain and put 1/8 hose on it.

Scarab,

First to be clear, the PSS is a REPLACEMENT for the Packing Seal. See the top pic I posted above, everyting to the right of the Flange is removed and replaced by the PSS system.

You and Capt Rick are right, you'd better allow for weekend to accomplish the task... with competent help it can be done in a day. I would say having a second pair of hands is a must. Capt Rick is also right in that should you get the old packing gland out, the job is a EMMENSLY easier (and cheaper) to replace the just the Teflon gland, and you are good to go. Should you want to deal with the shaft seal just ONE more time and be done with it... go with a PSS.

C'Mon Capt Rick, it's easier to do this by removing (or Liftting) the motor... maybe if you own a boat shop... LOL

Scarab, I encourage you to do your own research on shaft seals. There are different makes out there. So far the one I (and Tenn) are using seems to be a good one. I believe they are manufactured in the Seattle Area (Lynnwood). Check out the website and the instructional videos.   www.shaftseal.com

Certainly you can borrow my puller. I live in Battle Ground just North of Portland. I can ship it to you. Contact me with your shipping address in a PM. Tools: Nothing real special. Have decent array of 3/8 and 1/2 inch drive sockets (English), ratchets, and flex handles; the Shaft Nut required a 1.25 inch socket. Seventy Five percent of this whole process is removing the Shaft Nut (hidden inside the Flange bell), and pulling the Flange itself. All tasks are compounded by the tight space you're working in. Have a small mirror handy.

PSS part number: Your E22 PSS requirement and part number is identical to mine (2000 X22 DD).

We will exhcange contact info in your PM... and I'll be available to answer your questions as they arise.

Thanks guys, Im looking for a permanent fix but not sure I want to hassle with pulling the shaft unless I have to.  Figured it was a complete replacement, hence the name Packless Shaft Seal (duh Erik).

Im going to see if I cant just repack the shaft, probably be a lot cheaper and easier.  Ive got all the tools and help, just only going to have 3 days with the boat and one it has to be out of the water (dad chipped some fiberglass so Ive gotta fix that too, while its curing Ill repack the shaft).

Thanks for the help guys, Ill let you know what I decide!

Update: Bought the packing and the little packing removal tool (godsend, believe me people its worth the extra 8 bux I paid for the medium one) plus the prop stuff I needed and got it all installed the second weekend of August.  Absolutely no water is getting in now, I love not having to run the bilge all the time!

I fought with the packing trying to get it out with a mini flathead screwdriver, then said what the heck and used the tool.  30 seconds later I had both out.  So 20 mins of screwing around and then 30 sec of work...duh.

The packing needs to drip a little. It needs to keep the packing cool and lubricated or it will burn (wear) a groove in the shaft. A couple of drips every 15 secoconds or so is good enough.
