Check Engine Light???
« on: April 21, 2004, 21:08:27 pm »
Okay, now what's up with this? Tried to hook it up to a diagnostic, but I guess I need a card...what about a Lexus dealer? Anyone tried that?

Before you get frustrated and sell, remember your boat is still on warranty...and they all have their quirks.  Give one of the reps a call...I don't know who the rep is for your area, but Jeff Dorge is mine up here. His email is jeff_dorge@toyota.com.  He could at least point you in the right direction, or could probably get you whatever's needed.

When I had problems with my oil pressure, they sent me an entirely new brain for my boat...no problem, and the warranty folks are way more than fair.

Good luck!

Wow, thanks for the info. I didn't know that there was anyone besides Rick Cohen that I could talk to...Let me tell you how much help he is(n't).

Unfortunately I am without a warranty, the boat is a prototype that was owned by the factory...has a ton of unique options, but a warranty wasn't one of them...no biggie.

Not sure that they'll hold you (or any of us at this point) to the letter of the warranty law.

For what it's worth, Jeff Dorge and his boss Bill Nichtern have been great to me so far. They annie'd up and covered a dealer's mistake.

My only interaction with Rick Cohn was regarding that issue, and although he and the dude at Phil Dill took their time, they did get me in contact with Jeff.

There's only two techs that I'm aware of: Jeff and Rick. Get in touch with them, but please give them a chance to help you through. They might at least be able to see you the next time they're coming to town and help you troubleshoot.

We're here for you, but it's pretty hard to diagnose stuff over the phone/internet. (And I for one don't know much anyway).

So what scanner are you using, and do you have the M1UZ engine manual? Was doing a little reading about OBD2 scanners and now have more questions than before. We'll save those for later, though...

So check this link out:

http://laplogger.com/

Cool software and an interface that would allow you to read the OBD2 stuff AND plot it, too. They say you could use it as a poor-man's telemetry. Sounds pretty cool, like it might have the same features as the real pricey scan tools.

I'm about to buy one to reprogram the shift points on the new Mighty Merc. (as opposed to '69 version)
I don't think we need much more, or replace the fricking computer. I want those big exhaust manifolds, too!!!

What I mean is that I think that our boats are basically '65-66 Shelby mustangs, serious power parts are available, knowledge exists to tune the pieces that we can assemble to do the job. For less than retail!

I'm getting me some Aussie headers, if they'll fit under the clamshell!

Very High Oil Pressure
« Reply #7 on: April 24, 2004, 18:36:33 pm »
Hello,

I am considering purchasing an 2001 Epic 22 Direct drive boat. I'm concerned about the oil pressure. It reached 105 psi during the test drive. The dealer assured me that it was probably a faulty sending unit. The analog gauge max is 80psi and the needle is pegged at over 80. The computer screen flashes a warning the the oil pressure is too high at 105 psi.

The boat dealer service department didn't know where to find the sending unit and finally had to call Toyota to find it. Now they are telling me that everything is O.K. and that it's normal to have very high oil pressure in the first 45-1hr of operation. Have you heard of this problem before and what would you do next?

I really like the boat, it has 120hrs on it, and they are asking $26,500.00.

I called my local Toyota (auto) dealer service manager (also a big ski/wakeboarder) to ask if it's normal for the VT300i engine to run high oil pressure. He said that if they checked the sending unit (and they said that they did) it probably a stuck pressure relief valve located inside the crankcase ajacent to the oil pump.
Which would require removal of the engine changing the valve and reinstalling the engine.

Can anyone confirm either of these opinions?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the language from the owners manual of my Epic SX.  "The engine oil pressure gauge indicates the pressure of the lubricating oil inside the engine.  The average pressure ranges are between 20 PSI at 1000 RPM and 80 PSI at cruise range speeds.  A reading of pressures below 20 PSI at 1000 RPM may be caused by a low oil level or other serious engine problems.  If you experience low oil pressure, stop the engine immediately and check the oil level.  If the problem persists, see Toyota Marine Sports Dealer."

The oil gauge range is 0 to 80, therefore it is normal to have 80 PSI at cruising speeds.

Hope this helps.

The Toyota Technical Repair Manual says the Oil Pressure should be at 4.3psi at Idle and between 36 and 75psi at 3000 rpm.

Not sure what the right number is, but on a related note...don't be concerned when the pressure drops way down at low rpms. The boat does it, our Sequoia does it, and is therefore normal ;-)

Word of caution: don't trust what auto or even towboat dudes say about our Epic engine: it's such a different beast than what know, despite what they think.

Welcome, and please check out some of the oder posts - there's a ton of stuff that any prospective Epic owner might want to see, and there's even some discussion on this oil pressure topic as well.

About that warranty...what all does it still cover? My boat is running like $hit. Tried new plugs. A thousand new fuel filters. It still misses and runs
like hell, especially when under a load.

Use the good gas, top it off, never sits, even tried talkin' dirty to it...:-)

It is a stem to stern warrantee. Take it in, you have tried all the simple stuff that you can do yourself. They will get it to sing a song.

Rick said that it is out of warranty. It was manufactured in 7-00, and it's an '01. Not sure how long everybody else's is under warranty.

Also, my vin number doesn't match anything in the HIN decoder...
TMME005G001
...the 5th SX ever made. With no warranty.

p.s. I have to save the font for the Epic Marine stickers, but I don't know exactly how to do it...

Take it in to a former Epic dealer and get it straight, probably a bad sensor or something. They can find that stuff quickly with all the diagnostic tools that they should have.

Did you use Iridium plugs or one of the cheap types? You must use premium fuel, too.

If you can tell me the name of the font, that would be good enough. The one I found is called Concelian Alpha. It looks very similar.
