pm K-Town.  If memory serves, he sheared off a spindle or something a year or two ago.  I think he took it to a local place near the lake and had them replace the axle or something ???  Not a 100% sure though.  flyn2001.

Ouch. A guy told me that a wheel on my trailer is wobbling a bit, I should check my wheel bearings.

I'd recommend finding a local trailer place too.

It's funny you ask because this past Memorial Day my bearing gave out on my right rear wheel.  I tried making it back to the house but unfortunatly it mangled the spindle.  I tried to locate a replacement spindle locally here in the DFW area, but they are few and far between.  The spindle runs about $35.00 and a machine shop would charge you around $100.00-$150.00 to put it on, if they can remove the spindle without damaging the axle due to the "plug weld" that is on the bottom of the axle.  I contacted Ameratrail, in St. Cloud Florida, and told them what had happened.  To make a long story short, I ended up purchasing a new axle with two spindles for $185.00 + shipping.  Trust me, it's easier to go with a new axle.  In my experience it was harder to locate a spindle and make it cost effective compared to just buying a new axle.  Call Ameratrail and speak to Mark.  Be sure to let him know whether or not the trailer is white (for the X-22) or black (for the S-22).  He can build you a new axle and ship it within 2-3 days.  Also, be sure to check the hub and make sure that it's not trashed as well.  Mine was so I had to order another from UFP.  The part number for the hub/rotor is 41030.  They'll tell you that it's actually 41038, however this is just the new part number and cross references to the older hub/rotor.  The lesson I learned from this whole thing is that I will be repacking the bearings every year before I winterize the boat.  Hope this helps!

yeah i got a spindle for 35 bucks from california trailer works "dhmtrailers.com".  it was the left rear one that went out.  it chewed up the inside pressed on cup so i know it wouldnt hold grease and then just have the same problem later.  the hub with new bearings wouldnt even go on halfway.  so i got the 3500 flanged one for black tandem, disc, e21. thankfully theres a trailer repair shop right up the road the does custom welding. gonna give them a call and see how much they will charge. if its too much then i will just order a whole new axle and send back the spindle.  the hub itself was reuseable. thankfully after the bearings failed it rode on the races and they saved it from anymore damage.  so hopefully ill get to it next weekend and try to figure it all out.  THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP AND INFO!  "also the bearings did last ten years without repacking!"  ;D

hey Riorat thanks for the 411 and the heads up on that spindle.  couldnt find a trailer repair shop that would replace the spindle.  so we gave ameratrail a call and they said it would just mess it up if we tried to weld it.  so got one ordered up and hes gonna make one and send it are way.  so i guess its laying out in the 105 degree heat and replacing the axle now!  :'(

lilfoo...sorry for the delayed response.  Haven't been on the site in a little over a month.  Good luck with the axle and let me know how it works out!

I have a related question. I basically use my trailer twice a year (to the lake in the spring and back in the fall). I have taken it on several trips from Seattle to Idaho and back. It probably has <4000 miles on it. I have put grease in the bearings a few times but other than that no maintenance. So, how does one decide when to do real maintenance on the trailer?

Related to that, my tires are original. They have slight cracks on the edge of the sidewalls, which I noticed several years back. Other than that, they look new. Any thoughts on this as well? I'm taking the boat on a 1000 mile trip upcoming.

Thanks!

bearings ought to be repacked every year.  Marine grease resists water contamination (grease and water mixing together) but runs a bit warmer.  When those warm hubs hit cool water the small amount of air inside the hub contracts and sucks water in.

id inspect and repack those bearings before you go on that trip. it really blows when your on the side of the road when those go out. costs alot of money to replace bearing and axles and maybe a tow due to lack of care. the tires arent expensive really, ive seen worse. oh and  the correct tire pressure makes a heck of a difference going down the road aswell.
