slow throttle response??
« on: June 22, 2009, 17:59:28 pm »
I occasionally have a slow throttle response.  I thought it was bad gas but I have since burned a few tanks. Still it laggs and doesn't want to rev up easily.  Then it just goes away and runs fine for a while???  Any suggestions?  MAybe I have a bad spark plug or wire?  It only has 170 hours on the boat.

Change the plugs.  It should help if you have not changed them recently.

is it more like a stutter in the engine or like the engine isn't getting the signal to go?

former: gas, plugs, fuel separator/filter

latter - maybe it is something in the throttle lever / position sensor - someone smarter than me might be able to help you more on that one.

Yes it is like a stutter.  Then after a few minutes it just goes away.

You shoudl be able to isolate if it is the throttle linkage. push the button in on the handle to disengage the trany, then have someone look at the throttle body and see if there is a lag when moving the throttle to the forward postion. if it's slow you should be able to see it.

From my experience, it's probably a plug bad. It acts strangely when you have a bad plug. To test the plug, you can pull the plug coils one at a time at idle. If the plug is good, and the wire, you will hear a definite difference when you pull the plug. If you hear no difference when you pull the plug coil, it's a bad plug. Just don;t be standing in the water when you do this!
