X22 won't start

I headed out to the lake today and my boat wouldn't start. Gauges had power, blower was working, but when I turned the key I'd get a series of clicks, but the engine wouldn't turn over. Any ideas?

I had this EXACT problem.  Mine turned out to be a bad Perko (battery) switch.  I put all the cable ends onto one of the switch's posts until my new switch arrived.

I think lilfoo2225 had it with the starter. I tried the Perko switch, but no luck. I also tried some caveman mechanics and whacked the starter with a wrench and it fired straight away. Looks like I'll be replacing the starter this week.

Anyone know if I can pick up a new starter at the local Toyota dealership or if it's a special item?

Just replace the starter contacts inside the starter. peace of cake and there like $40.

Although I have not had my starter off, I agree with Wakejunky. I spoke with an old Toyota boat dealership in Seattle area this summer and they told me they have either never replaced a starter or only replaced one in their history. Makes me seriously doubt you need a new one.

he just said he had to whack the damn thing. so that means its bad. but thankfully these are rebuildable.

ColdNorth, I know it's not the perko switch as I managed to rule that one out. As lilfoo2225 said, when I whack it with a wrench it fires, so I'm pretty sure it's the starter or a component within it. I'm going to go with Wakejunky and replace the starter contacts, rather than the entire starter. I figure a $40 fix should be ruled out before I drop $680 CAD for a new starter.

Wakejunky said the replacement is a piece of cake and I hope to hell it isn't as complicated as getting to the starter in the first place.

First check the keys sends 12 volts to the the starter. ( purple wire) Then you have a good ground, Then check if the harness has good not rusted connection. Most starter do not go bad...

Hey, if you've got instructions on changing those contacts, post them here so we can have them if we need um. Pictures are nice. I'll add to the maintenance section and give you props..not propellers..proper recognition...
