Anyone ever replace one of these?  I need to and I am considering doing it myself.  I have an Epic 21 - DirectDrive

Thanks

Make sure you take pics, Craig. BTW, have you owned the boat since new, and I thought they recalled the 21 footers?

I bought the boat as a demo back in 2001 so I am the first "titled" owner - it did have a couple hundred hours on it.  The hours didn't bother me because we have a few Toyota/Lexus products and that 4L motor is darn near invincible.

If the 21's were recalled nobody told me.  Are you talking about the steering cable being recalled or the boat?  That would be a shocker to me since we have had relatively few issues with it and we use it A LOT.
I think the last count is 750+ hours.

If I recall, the only E21's that Toyota replaced were the original '99's due to a claim that the original mold had a slight warp, and there had been claims of chine lock.  Rather than dispute it, Toyota replaced every E21 that had been delivered to that point--pretty amazing.

Pete K. knows the details on this(I think either he, or one of the dealers on Lake Lanier, told me about it when I was looking to buy one that had been replaced by Toyota, but never driven by the owner due to a divorce).

If you have a 2001, you should be OK.

I have a 1999 E21  even though I bought it in '01.  Is there any way I could tell (by the HIN, where on the boat there would be imperfections, etc)?

Would the Toyota dealer have to disclose that like a lemon law'd car?

Craig,

I'd pull the vin from your boat and send a quick email or call to whoever your warranty rep is.  They can tell you all about it just by the VIN.  I'd imagine it's not a problem, because I think anybody being offered a free new boat would jump on the opportunity gladly, especially a dealership (since your boat was a demo previously).

There is a service bulletin outlining the removal of a certain chine under the boat. I saw the bulletin at the dealership (Phil Dill in Dallas) that Lakerats' SX is headed to.

Phil Dill (Greg Gaudin) had a bulletin that related to removing (I think, as I'm sure you wouldn't add a chine) a chine on the Epic 21. It's where I first heard about the chine lock caution. Pete's site shed more light on it, but I clearly remember that it was the small Epic, not the 22 footers.

I copied a whole bunch of stuff, but so wish I could have gotten more for when people with other models have issues - specifically kick myself for just copying the S22 wirin diagrams.

I'm not sure that that specific dealership would let me copy again, or whether Jeff and the other Toyota dudes would assemble and distribute that stuff to post on the site.
