Why Buy an Epic now?
« on: February 05, 2010, 23:11:28 pm »
I am in the market for a inboard to take the family out and for me to be able to casually wakeboard behind.  I have read the history of Toyota Marine and am wondering if this seeming awesome boat is going to be worth it  as it ages due to issues with parts and the like.  I am looking at an 2000 X-22 with 1270 hours but was "rebuilt" around 1000 hours.  The interior looks fantastic, but longevity of parts availability???

I know everyone on here is sold out on these boats, but what are the realistic expectations?
Thanks guys.
Josh

You should do a timing belt change at 1k hrs, it's well documented how to do it here on the site, there are several posts by guys with a lot of first hand experience with automotive versions of this engine. It's not that big a deal for an experienced Toyota mechanic. I would not be scared of the boat because it got a timing belt, there's still a good 2k of engine hours if they changed the oil once in a while. Drive the boat, if it runs smoothly it's probably fine. If not, change the plugs even with cheap ones and drive it again, it'll probably be fine. If the gauges including the oil pressure gauge are flakey, it's a common problem with many boat manufacturers of that era.

The parts will be available until the end of this year through this website, after that, who knows? Capt Rick, what's the state of the union on parts availability? Could TMS interest Skidim or someone with purchasing all or some of the inventory? Maybe not everything but if fuel pumps, intake parts, exhaust manifolds, driveshafts, rudders (if different from standard inboard parts), computers..

I plan on purchasing a few more spares before the end of the year. If you get a good deal on a Toyota vs another boat, put the money into a few parts from the website.

I love my Epic, not selling anytime soon, it will outlive me.

Thanks for the threads to review.  I have gone through them.  I had read several others prior to posting as well.  Most of them are from 2006.  Now with just a year remaining for TMS to have the parts, things are different now.   I think cyclone's:
"The parts will be available until the end of this year through this website, after that, who knows? Capt Rick, what's the state of the union on parts availability?"  is the real question that matters. This is what I was wondering???

As for the specifics on the boat I referred to, a lot of the history is unknown.  The current owner states that he bought it about 3 years ago.  The engine had been "rebuilt" before then.  That owner didn't have any of the paperwork but stated that it was done by toyota.   The reasons for the rebuild are unknown.  Unsure if it just meant a timing belt as cyclone stated or something more.

The current owner says that he had a compression test done prior to purchase and it checked out.  He has done simple maintenance since owning it and has never had any trouble.  I have not test driven it yet, but am eager to.  Any thoughts as to special things to watch out for?

Thanks

most parts are not specific to our boats - Toyota borrowed a lot of already existing parts that other manufacturers used

rudder, prop, propshaft are all standard marine parts as are the raw water pump/impeller - you can go to a local Mastercraft/Supra/Ski Nautique/Malibu dealer for this stuff

Toyota marine specific are the computer (no problems with those that I am aware of) , exhaust manifolds (even if we run out the aussies make replacements) , and other electronics would be specific to our boats

I certainly am not freaking out as the only problem I have had is with the gauges and that was a borrowed part from the Malibu's

since nobody here seems to ever have "big" problems I bet we never really depleted stock on a lot of these parts

I like cyclone's idea about speculating on parts to have as spares - I see a "trade/barter" forum in this sites future
