Steeper wake
« on: April 21, 2010, 14:16:51 pm »
Ok, dumb question, but its baffling my mind.  What makes the wake Steeper.  I know weight makes it bigger, but what makes it more like a skate ramp.  I rode behind a 99 calabrea and they didn't even fill the ballast and I didn't have to try to clear the wake, I just did.  I got really good pop and height.  Some say its the narrow hull, and some say its the straight up and down sides of the back of the boat.  What is it, any one know what it is for sure?

the shape of the wake is determined by the shape of the hull.  if you are having trouble clearing the wake, shorten your rope until you get it down and then let it back out as you start going bigger.  more weight will make the wake bigger and bigger is always better!

I don't have a problem clearing the wake.  I want a steeper wake, and if I have to I will modify my hull to do it  ;D I will.  If I were to build a boat for the steepest wake out there, (like the super air nautique's) what does the hull have to be like????

A narrow hull with a flat bottom creates the lippy Nautique style wake. Our boats have a wider beam and a slight V shape. Our wakes tend to be rampy. You can get a decent lip on our wake by adding weight to the front of the boat. A 750 in the walkway helps. You have to be careful driving any time you run weight up front, true for any inboard.

You can't get a Nautique style wake out of our boats, but the wake is big and clean and rampy. There's plenty of pop to get you over the wake, it's technique more than anything else.
