Does the starter for the VT300I specific to the boat or can you get an equivalent starter from a toyota vehicle?  If so can you help me with the details? ???

The consensus here on epicmarine is that our starters are pretty much bulletproof.  I thought mine was bad, pulled it out, and upon testing found out it was not the starter (bad perko switch got me).  And if it is bad,  you might be able to get away with a brush replacement.

Take a look under a post titled 'X22 won't start'. I thought I had a problem with the starter last year, but it turned out to be bad contacts in the starter. Contacts will run you about $40 and a weekend of time. It's a pain to get to, but not very expensive if you do the work yourself.
