Epic trunk lid struts
« on: March 16, 2003, 21:08:16 pm »
Has anyone had to replace the gas struts that keep the trunk lid up on an Epic 22?  Are they generic, buy anywhere struts or do they have to be specifically ordered from Toyota.  I've got at least one bad on mine.

They are bad right out of the box. I just had mine replaced under warrantee, the new ones are just as weak as the old. Look at how they attach to the lid, they don't apply much leverage. I think that you could probably get them at an auto parts store, certainly cheaper than Toyota! They'll get a little better when it's warm outside, but not much.

Thanks for the info.  Did you get out on the Lake over the weekend?  How's the weather?

It's cold and raining :( Hopefully the weather will cooperate this weekend. My kids are ready to go.

Mine are also bad...and, the material that the lid on the rear ski trunk on my S22 (2001) is made out of has broken near the hinge and I almost never used it to begin with.  Plus, I have ripped the hatch "handle" out twice. Now, I used a small sheet of stainless and put it across where the handle screws into the lid and replaced the handle using 4 screws to screw it all into place. It works nicely.

i went to autozone soon after i bought my boat and just picked one that was the same size.  they have more pressure than the stock and work great!!!  if you have not yet solved the problem i can check the model # for you.

Part no. and price would be appreciated.  I looked up what looks like a good replacement in overton's: they were ~$20 each plus shipping for the 15" type used on the E22 and X22.
