drain tubes emptying LOTS of water into my boat
« on: July 07, 2010, 08:50:51 am »
Had to have my boat winterized by someone we don't know and whom we haven't been able to speak to since....boat is running beautifully except that it is sucking in water when it's running.  After going some distance, I am having to hit the bilge to remove about 11/2 inch of water.  We believed it was the drain plug, so a friend pulled and retightened it. We started up the boat and realized that the water is gushing in from the little drain tubes right above the drain nut. (on both sides of the engine).  Are there supposed to be some type of tap-in plugs on these tubes? Can't figure out why, if the plug is in, there is water coming out the tube. I'm in a pretty isolated area and there is a boat mechanic on the lake, but I'd like to have some input from some of you who might know the boat better before I hand it over to him.  My husband typically takes care of these things but he can't help out right now, so any input would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Try tightening the petcocks on both sides of the engine. There right beside the little tubes. It sounds like they were left open after winterizing and the water used to cool the engine is draining out (The petcocks are loosened to drain water from the engine block to prevent freezing in the winter).

Look under the maintenance section, Epic Winterizing Procedure - Direct Drive , pages 5 and 6 and it will show you how to do it. They can be a pain to reach, but it is really easy to do. I'd also check the bolts on the bottom of the mainfolds as well. It shows you how in the same document.

Thank you for the input. I know the bolts you're talking about. They seem to be in as far as they can go- but we noticed they are not flush with the block. There is about a 1/4 inch gap. It LOOKS like they should go in farther, and then it would make sense that they would block off the drain tube. The fear I have is that in cranking on those bolts they may end up stripped. We'll try again today with a little more muscle.
Of course, I'm several hundred miles from home without the manual....

Are you tightening the whole petcock body?  You need only tighten the nut on the very end.  I'd upload a picture but the upload folder is full.  If you go to http://www.epicmarine.com/figures/Fig.03.gif the part you need to tighten is #48

Did tightening the bolts solve the problem ? I ran into the same problem today and just snugged the bolt a a turn or so and hope that closes off the flow of water.  Just one of the few new boat teething issues.
