Won't go over 2500 rpm
« on: August 11, 2010, 17:32:04 pm »
My S22 runs well on the trailer in neutral, but won't go any higher than 2500 rpm (even at full throttle)on the water, but will do fine in reverse. Every scanner the mechanic has hooked up has failed to read it. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Very frustrated and losing the summer!

You may have a bad throttle lever sensor. test like this

1. remove air intake tube so you can visibly see the throttle plate
2. with the key on engine off, one person to observe the throttle plate, one person to move the drivers throttle through the full
    range.
3. results- if the throttle plate moves with the throttle lever completely through the range to full throttle, plate fully open. its
                good.
if the throttle plate only opens 25 to 30 % at full throttle then you have a bad throttle lever sensor.

please don't mistaken the throttle lever sensor for a throttle position sensor, they are different.

Hey there... I had a similar issue as you from Memorial day to 3 weeks ago...Identical conditions... great start...great neutral idle... under a load to accelerate in drive it would get to 2500 and bog out...power curve dropped off hard!   Everyone tried to read the system with car OBD's and only Capt Rick had the software for the reader for $180... the issue was the engine CPU that was $1000....runs like a champ now

Had a very similiar problem with our 99 a couple years ago. We couldn't figure it out, after changing the fuel filter twice, and numerous lake runs it just wouldn't run right. Changed the spark plugs, and it solved the problem.

Have you ever replaced the plugs?

If you haven't, i've heard on this site you can buy plugs for a 2000 4.7L tundra with no performance changes.

Give it a try.
