Needed: Advice for water leak
« on: August 27, 2010, 22:24:06 pm »
Before I start pulling parts Monday, anyone with advice would be appreciated. My 2000 Epic 21 is leaking water under the manifold on the passenger side. I thought it was the clamp that goes around the hose to the sea strainer, but running around on the lake today without the engine cover, it appears to be coming out of the part that has the (two transmission cooling lines)? The cap on the end facing the sea strainer flexes. Water spills out with any engine rpm above 1000, otherwise it just drips. Taking the hose off, I see a honeycombed screen inside. Is this something I can just fix with a marine seal or a new gasket? I am going to work on this Monday.

Thanks in advance.

Bill

Sounds like may have the same problem as Wet-N-Frugal. Check out the post titled 'Wet N' Frugal's X22 Projects: Transmission Cooler'.

Listen to Capt Rick on this one... replace the cooler.

You don't want this thing to leak internally also and now you have water in your tranny :o

It looks like the same problem Wet-N-Frugal had. I was getting high temp alarms at low speeds, so after a day on the lake of alternately either high speed running or turn the engine off and run the bilge pump, it needs to be fixed. I would have mentioned the name on the tranny cooler, but like Wet-N-Frugal's the paint obscured the lettering. I believe it the same Sen-Dure part.
Thanks W-n-F for the thorough analysis and pics.

I can sweat copper, having done it for indoor plumbing, but I would feel a bit better if I could guarantee that I didn't mess up my transmission lines, so Cap't Rick, I will be sending you an email soon. It's a good time to flush the tranny anyway.

Mine popped apart before I knew that it had to be winterized, I was able to get it repaired by gluing the end back on with JB Weld. It has worked ever since. You can test it for leaks before you put it back on.
