Epictique/Nautic - Prop, oil filter re-location ???
« on: September 04, 2010, 00:04:05 am »
Hey guys -my name is Mike - I am in Tennessee and not a real big internet user so I will not be on here every day but I do treasure this site - It has helped me quite a bit - I bought the Epic engine a couple years ago from  'rustnrot'  and I am getting close to final installation into my '78 Ski Nautique hull - I'm not sure what to call it or how or if I should even register it with you'all but I am here to stay - I love this engine - I will have some other questions I hope you can help me with but for right now I have just a few - First off, any suggestions for engine paint - I have a few spots and I guess some good engine black will suffice but has anyone re-painted and engine any other color [I know, I know, keep it black] - Secondly, and much more importantly, I need some propeller advice/ideas - The engine is a '99 with the standard 300 ponies - I have a brand new ZF Hurth with a 1:1.51 ratio and I am thinking of starting with a 13x16 prop - I do have a one inch shaft and probably need to go to one and an eighth, but I am going to start with the one incher [I have an older 1:1 Velvet too but...]- The boat with the engine probably wieghs in at 2000 lbs so it is quite a bit lighter, I am guessing, than the Epic - Also, I am going to have to re-locate the oil filter; the stringers on the Nautique are narrower and the filter will hit or at best never unscrew without raising the engine - Has anyone used a relocation kit like is made for race/drag cars - My filter is a Bosch and has no ID numbers on it; what filter does one use - I can probably find a kit from one of the speed shops - I just figured one of you'all had installed a double filter kit by now - I will get back to you - thanks alot and one day you can see a picture of my new Frankennautiqepic - Still trying to figure out what to call it - captmcbk

That's so cool that the engine still lives, and is giving life to a Nautique. I love frankenstein vehicles. You are always welcome here, of course. The dicks at Planet Nautiques will probably stick their noses in the air, jealous of the superiority of your powerplant compared to antiquated pushrod pickup truck engines in their boats that weight twice as much and produce less horsepower, all while burning twice as much gas.

I would think you could relocate the oil filter without too much trouble, you might have to hunt for fittings the right size. The engine uses oil pressure around 110 PSI, so you need to make sure it can handle the pressure.

As for a prop, the stock transmission was 1:1.26, so you are going to have to experiment a bit. You could try the stock prop and see what you get. Somebody would probably loan you their spare or original prop, that would get you an idea what you need. You should aim for 5800-6000 rpm at WOT.
