Timing Belt /Water pump replacement on my 99 Epic
« on: September 13, 2010, 02:37:37 am »
I have searched this and other forums for a post on timing belt replacement for our Epic boats.  Some say its the same as a Tundra, or other vehicles but the Boats are a bit different. I did mine last Friday and thought I would share my experience.

This is not a difficult job and can be done by people with average mechanical skills.  The only special tools required are a puller for the crankshaft pulley ( I used my steering wheel puller).  You will need two M8x1.25x 60mm bolts to connect your puller to the pulley.  I used my air tools which makes the job easier but it could be done with hand tools.  The crankshaft pulley bolt may be hard to remove with an impact wrench.

I purchased all Toyota OEM parts from a discount supplier on line for about 400.00 shipped.  I decided not to replace crank and camshaft seals as some have suggested.  Here's the parts list:

Timing Belt       (13568-09070)

Timing Belt Tensioner Bearing   (13505-0F010)
Timing Belt Idler Bearing   (13503-0F010)
Hydraulic Tensioner  (13540-50030)
Water Pump   (16100-59275-83)
Serpentine Drive Belt   (90916-02586)
160 degree thermostat   (        )
Others have suggested 2 O-rings but my water pump came with them included and a gasket for the pump.

My boat is 11 seasons old with only 400 hrs on the engine, but as stated this is an interference engine and I didn't want to push the envelope!  It took me about 6 hours but I was also taking pictures.  Depending on what this forum will accept I may have to restart several posts.

Start by removing the entire engine cover including the lower part.  I did not remove the ski pylon until I tried to remove the crankshaft pulley and realized I couldn't get my impact wrench on the bolt.  So you may want to remove it before you start.

Then I removed the coilpacks and the spark plugs to reduce the compression while turning the engine.  Verify TDC on #1 with a compression testor.  The #1 plug is the front plug on the right side of the engine..as viewed from the front.

Next remove the air intake assembly and lay it back on top of the engine. Then remove the 3 water hoses and zip tie them back out of your way.

Next remove the tension from the serpentine belt with a 14mm socket and remove the belt.

Remove the thermostat housing. Notice the o-ring and rubber gasket around the thermostat.  My thermostat did not come with new ones so save these as you may need to reuse them.

Now remove the water hose which supplies cooling water to the oil filter

Next remove the thermostat housing assembly.  It is held by 2 bolts but the O-ring locks it on tightly so you may need to pry it carefully.

Now remove the left (as viewed from the front)camshaft cover.

Now move to the right camshaft cover ( as viewed from the front). This cover requires you to undo some electrical connectors and pop out some tabs securing the wiring harness.  The camshaft position sensor wire is feed back through a hole in the cover.

Next remove the top center cover with the bar code.
