Boat pulls to the left! Normal??
« on: June 04, 2004, 23:06:11 pm »
A few weeks ago the propeller and strut on my 1999 Toyota Epic 22 were damaged because they were hit by something underwater. I think we might have beached the boat on shore too fast and the underwater mechanics got bent. We were getting a strong vibration that shook the entire hull from the back of the boat. My boat shop in Orlando has replaced the strut with a new one and realigned the propeller. The drive shaft checked out okay. Now the vibration is gone.

I test drove the boat today to make sure everything was alright before taking the boat home. Now the boat is pulling to the left. Is this normal?

Basically the boat drives like a car with bad alignment. When going from 0-15 mph, there's a strong pull to the left, about 20 degrees to the left. When going 21 mph, there's less of a pull, about 7 degrees. The service rep at the shop is telling me that this is normal and all ski boats pull a little.

Now when I pull a wakeboarder out of the water, I have to hold the steering crooked till the boat gets to 20 mph, then slightly straighten it out a bit.

I remember I used to have no pull on my Epic 22 before the repair. There might have been a tiny amount of pull one way, but it was unnoticeable unless I was going backwards.

Do you guys have a pull to the left on your boats? On my Epic, the pull is very noticable at under 15 mph, and goes away at about 35 mph.

What do you guys recommend I do?

It seems most ski boats pull slightly one way or the other.

I'd like to know how much other Toyota's pull.

Does your Toyota pull one way or the other and how much?

(Once again, from the factory, mine drove straight)

I don't remember any pull at all, but will let you know the next time we take her out.

Mine doesn't have any pull at all, regardless of boat speed. Sounds like something is still messed up. Also, when direct drives pull one way or the other, it is usually to the right...so if it's pulling to the left, sounds like another reason for concern.

Pete has said that his boat pulls to the right...so I wonder if some pull is normal on the 99's.  But then again, his pulls to the RIGHT.

Take it somewhere else.  From the tranny back, the Epics are identical to all other boats out there.

No pull here.  No matter the weight or speed.

Its the new parts and the rudder. Ski boats are usually set up to pull to the right or left, so that all slack is out of the steering linkage. This makes it easier to hold the line through the ski bouys. The pull can be tuned out by grinding a little bit off one side or the other of the rudder. The shop that replaced the parts should tune the rudder for you for free. They can make it so that it does not pull. There is an article http://www.cyclone-cj.com/forum/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=174
referenced in this thread.

No pull at any speed in my S22. However, the boat turns very much easier one way than the other (don't ask which ;-)

Just wanted to give everyone an update on this.

After 2 weeks of complaining that the pull is NOT normal, the insurance company and the repair shop(Central Florida Boating in Orlando) agreed to switch out the prop with another one to see if the pull went away.

Keep in mind that my own prop was hit by something underwater and was sent to some shop to realign it perfectly. When I got it back, it started pulling.

Anyway, the first prop we switched it out with was a used 3-blade the same size as the Toyota prop. It almost completely took the pull away! And the vibration was still gone. So, I decided to keep this used prob on the boat and take the Toyota prop that pulled back home as a backup. Now the boat just barely pulls. And I'm fine with it.

I guess Toyota aligns and adjusts the propeller differently.

Just so everyone knows, I didn't scratch the rudder down or anything. It was all in the prop.

Mine only pulls when my sister-in-law is in the boat.
