Limp Mode
« on: July 10, 2011, 05:30:06 am »
I'm in limp mode with no check engine light.  The drive temp light is on but drive feels cool and has plenty of fluid.  It goes into gear but it idles at 1600rpm and that's all it will do.  There's no throttle response.  Has anyone had this problem?

Check to make sure the wire didnt break or fall off the temp sender on the unit.  It is possible that is got disconnected.  I have not had the problem.... yet.... but that is where I would start.

So this is actually my problem, I was away from the Internet on a boating trip so my girlfriend posted my problem for me. Anyways thanks for the suggestions, I checked the resistance across the two specified terminals on the accelerator position sensor and came back with a reading of 2500ish. The drive temp light is what is wierd to me??  I assume that means the temp of the transmission???  The only electrical connection on the trans looks to be a neutral safety switch??  I checked the fluid level and condition as well as the filter and it all looks good. I also tried reseting the computer by disconnecting the battery to no avail.

it may sound dumb but when you move the throttle from neutral to full throttle does the throttle cable move the the throttle linkage at all? if i doesnt move the throttle linkage at all. you have a cable or hand throttle issue. with key on not running do you get a buzzing noise from the throttle motor?

The throttle cable moves and actuates the arm on the accelerator position sensor. It's hard to tell if the throttle body is buzzing when I turn the key on because the perfect pass makes alot of noise at the same time...as far as I can tell it's not buzzing like it used to??  Can I pull codes with a regular ol obdII scanner?

1. Turn battery switch off. 2. Turn battery switch on. Turn key to on does the engine light and buzzer sound go after a few minutes?

I disconnected the battery for a few minutes to no avail.  I'm actually not getting an engine light, but a "drive temp" light.  My buzzer has never worked.

The drive temp light is on under 1200 rpm disconnect one wire on vdrive, use phillips screw driver and tape wire end. This will stop the drive light. You need to connect scan tool to find out codes,

Email me boatetrade@aol.com to get a paypal rental of scan tool.

Help!  At the lake today boat will barley idle or run. Temp. is good, Volts are good, oil pressure is good and plenty of gas.  When I put it in to neutral is seems to idle fine (2,000 to even 3,000 rpm) but when it is put in drive it only runs between 500rmp and 1,000rpm.  When I move the throttle forward it wants to die. I have no warning light and no alarms.  Where do it start?

I had the same problem last year. Took months to figure it out. Turned out to be a short at the fuel pump. I'd check those straight away to make sure they work. If they are running you can feel them vibrate when you prime the fuel rails (red botton at the back of the engine. If the boat stalls when trying to go,  clamp off the fuel return line with vice grips (at the fuel pumps) and try it again. If the boat doesn't stall you have a bad pump, loose connection or a short. PM me if you'd like.

Based on your symptoms and lack of a check light, I would bet money on fouled plugs. They really show up under load. Use Denso or NGK's. I use 2000 tundra v8 4.7 liter plugs. They tend to not foul as easy as the iridium plugs, plus they are way cheaper.
