steering problems
« on: June 28, 2004, 05:16:29 am »
Anyone had any steering problems ?I had a major one saturday. The quit turning in the middle of a turn close to the damn on our lake. The wheel was to the stop but the boat went straight. We were doing about 25mph,I cut the throttle, still no turn, then put it in reverse to avoid hitting the bank, but the boat hit rocks and went up on the bank.
My prop & rudder are trashed. Most likely the strut and drive shaft too. Also had some minor fiberglass damage to the bottom of the hull.I just thank God that nobody was hurt!I'll try to get the picks uploaded soon.

OUCH. Nothing that can't be fixed, for a price :( Sorry to hear about that! What boat do you have? Did you have a steering system failure or was it a hull design thing where the boat wouldn't recover from a steering input?

These aren't the type of pics I was hoping to see ;-(

Mine has gottena little squirrely at higher speeds, especially when traversing rollers (running parallel with the crests).

Dang, that sucks. Was it a failure of the steering system (rudder didn't turn) or a chine lock problem (rudder at lock, boat goes straight) or what. You must have been pretty close to the shore or dam if you couldn't slow down enough by cutting the throttle. Ski boats don't coast for very far, and your prop was turning when you hit the bottom.
