Off topic....I hate washing/waxing!!!!
« on: September 05, 2011, 00:53:58 am »
Looking back over past ~nine years with the S22 (first boat)...I can say without qualification that I hate washing/waxing. We keep the boat so clean, wiping her down with wet rag and drying every surface each lake day seriously 90% of the time. All cushions come out each night, all gelcoat is clean each morning. We'll hit is with a water spot remover/waxer like Ducky or Hor Sauce once in a while. We vacuum each trip or two, and service religiously once a year (fluids, filters, impeller). I only fill with Chevron, cover the boat as well as possible, quickly address crumbs and drink spills. Bottom line, for being 11 years old, the boat's in fantastic shape. I'd put her up against any other 11 year old for sure. Thanks much to Matt and Chad Eden, the original owners who take the cake in terms of being clean freaks and handed be a near-new boat. But hey, we've got three kids - can't stay new forever.

However, scrubbing the carpet, washing and waxing is something we do honestly once a year or less. I hate it. It's like a full day to wash and scrub carpets, needs a couple days to dry out, and can't wax until washed and vinegared to kill Havasu's water spots. Only then are you in a position to wax and after the first day, I'm less than motivated to finish. The only nice thing is being able to use 3M Finesse to get some of the little scratches out. Still, I get (and am today) so over this evolution part way through the first day.

Thanks for listening to my rant. Curious if anyone else feels the same?

Haha can totally relate. i haven't polished and waxed the boat in three years. but then again i have maybe been out a dozen times in that time. my one year old definitely keeps me from keeping up the boat the way i use to. its still in great shape but its definitely not pampered like it was before.

i scrubbed the carpets out and wiped it down 2 weeks ago and i was freaking wiped out. i guess I'm getting old. hahaha

on the other hand all the vacationers are now gone and the water is smooth as glass. gonna try to get some serious winter
riding in this year ;D ;D ;D

So not too long after my rant...I set down the 3M and broke out the MacGuires. Holy cow, what a difference. That stuff is so easy to apply, to wipe, and to appreciate the soft, smooth shine. Also replaced the keel roller with aself-centering one form Bass Pro. OMG, after that it was like if you need a motivation, just grab that babie on her side :-) Clean cover, clean seats, slcik gelcoat....very very nice. But holy cow, a whole 3-day weekend! Wakejunky, make sure you let me know if you're in SoCal, we'll get a ride together.

might have to give the old Mac Guires a shot. There is nothing like a shiny boat. do you have a electric polisher or are you applying by hand?

wouldn't exactly say I'm in SoCal, more like south central. I'm in the Bakersfield/Taft area. actually if your from SoCal I'm sure you have been or at least know about Buena Vista Lake. I'm a half mile from the back entrance. Would definitely be down for some riding ;D

I use this stuff http://tech-shine.com/ on everything!  It is a different style of finish protectant.  Basically all you do is wash your boat or car with soap or with the boat just water, and wash it again with the tech-shine then dry! It is really amazing stuff.  I highly recommend it!  I will say it is not a wax and will not restore a poor surface finish, it will restore slightly, but in reality tech-shine is designed to protect your finish.

Cool, Denver...

Wakejunky, I love that lake for skiing. Do you have to reserve so far in advance or is that just for camping that I recall?

I just call that washing and waxing thing "maintenance". It sure is a lot easier to keep the boat clean than to get it clean after a lot of time in the "Muddy Maumee River".

toyotafreak- you only need reservations for camping, and that is usually only prime season months. the lake is good for skiing its very shallow 8 feet or so. it makes wakeboarding a bit more challenging but we have learned to ride the deepest spots on the west end just off the main shore line and south of the island once you make the turn. i would guess that path averages about eleven feet. I'm blown away by the size of my wake and riding when I'm on a deep lake. its very true when they say you need to be in at least 12 feet of water for the wake to develop to its full potential.

about three years ago you could fall in the middle of BV and the water was chest high........it was sad. the boat stirred up the bottom and looked like choclate milk in my wake. the boat and our gear was nasty dirty

What are you guys using to help minimize oxidation/fading?  I use Maguires wax or Nu Finish for waxing.  My boat stays covered when it's not in use, but as is sets on my dock/lift the left side gets pounded by the sun in the morning till the sun passes overhead.  My Epic 22 decals are starting to fade below the bow line.  I am going to get after it with some rubbing compound this weekend and do my usual end of season wash/wax/clean out, but wanted to address this situation before next season.  It's a real pain to do any body maintenance with it on  my lift.

I use that 303 Aerospace Protectant - I got the interior redone a few years ago and use a version of the 303 on that stuff as well.  Like most of the Epic owners, I haven't been using my boat as often but I waxed it last summer, replaced all the decals, and the changed the rub rail from white to black.  Ha ha, still love getting compliments on the Epic...

tenn16200- i will have to say changing the rub rail on your boat has made a huge difference in the overall look. i like it. props on the red trailer also. probably one of the best looking boats on the site. is that the original trailer just repainted?
